When people take a look at how far technology has come since the Civil War, a lot has changed. Some of the things in the past were limited based of what they had, meaning that the problems they faced were due to the lack of technological assistance and resources. Technology is one of the many changes to our society, not only because people just create things, but because of the science and research put into these advances. From these advances, the technology created found a way to help the problems faced in a number of areas. One of these technological advances was the X-ray.
What was society like before the discovery of the X-ray? The only way that a human body could be examined was through the use of touch/probing, physical examination, and the doctors’ best guess. Doctors were limited to physical examinations such as endoscopy, which is the process of surgically opening the body. The downside to the use of an endoscope was that the patient would have to be critically ill because the early probing caused a lot of damage to the body. Until a small light bulb was produced in the 1908’s for a hysteroscopy (viewing the uterus) endoscopy was a blind science. As far as probing goes, the doctors could only diagnose based off a guess of what the problem might be. Other attempts were the use of sound waves through the body and electrical induction. One famous attempt at electrical induction was Alexander Graham Bell who attempted to find the bullet in President James Garfield head after an assignation attempt. Using a new form of non-surgical medical imaging, Graham attempted to find the bullet but failed largely due to the metallic bed the president was lying on (he was a big man and no one wanted to move him). In summary, X-rays have contributed a lot to saving the lives of human beings. X-rays have been used prior to surgery and in conjunction with physical exams. X-rays have been used to test metal welds both to make sure the weld is good or when accidents happen to see if there are breaks in the welding. X-ray technology is a way to see into the body or objects without tearing it, opening it up, or tearing it apart. X-ray technology like other computer technology is undergoing smaller but cheaper changes as silicon chips begin to do the work of open ended and closed x-ray tube technology.

During the cold winter of 1895, a German scientist by the name of Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen was working with a cathode-ray tube when he noticed nearby crystals were glowing. When Roentgen reached for the crystals he was amazed when the shadow cast on the crystal was not of his whole hand, but just his bones. Roentgen covered the tube with heavy black paper and saw that the crystals still glowed and the shadow of his hand bones still shown through, he then determined that a new ray was being emitted that could penetrate through thick materials. (1.) He later found that the rays could pass through most anything, but would cast a shadow of solid objects; these shadows could then be captured on film. Among the solid objects Roentgen shot with these rays was human tissue, the rays would penetrate the tissue, but the bones would cast a shadow, which could then be caught on film. One of Roentgen’s first experiments with X-rays was on his wife’s hand where, on the film, you could see her hand bones and her wedding ring. (1.) While the discovery of x-rays was a huge advancement in medical technology, they were not used in the medical field at first. Instead the mystical invisible rays that could penetrate solid objects were used in the industrial field.
In the radiology profession first you must write the patient’s file. This includes information about insurance, medical history, what the required x-ray is for and where it is going to be taken on the body. Writing in this way is similar to writing a small research paper. You must do research on the patients and there history and what insurance they have. Writing the report is important because the information must be accurate so the patient can be helped as much as possible. If the information about medical history is incorrect it can cause a huge problem for the patient. For example, if the patient is claustrophobic they would need to get an open room x-ray where the patient isn’t in an enclosed tube so they don’t have a panic attack and potentially injure themselves and others. The beginnings of radiation therapy were a result of x-rays, first discovered by a German physicist named Wilhelm Roentgen in 1895. During experimentation with electricity, he found that certain types of energy were able to pass through his body and produce an image of his skeletal structure. Shortly after Roentgen’s discovery of how to produce x-rays, the medical potential of them was explored and used to diagnose health issues. The use of radiation was taken even further than x-rays by Emil Grubbe, who became the first radiation oncologist. Radiation oncology is the study of the therapeutic benefits of radiation. Grubbe earned this title because he was the first to propose using x-rays as treatment for breast cancer, and his experiment was accompanied by immense success. One of the most recently new advances in radiology is the use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). MRI has been around for the past century. It was at first called Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and then it changed to MRI once there was an available image. Walter Gerlach and Otto Stern were the first scientists to start experimenting with the magnetic imaging. Their very first experiment was looking at the magnetic moments of silver by using some type of x-ray beam. The scientists then discovered this was by realizing that the magnetic force in the equipment and in the object itself. In 1975, the first image was finally created using and MRI machine. The scientists used a Fourier Transformation machine to reconstruct images into 2D. The first images ever use diagnostically was in 1980. This is when hospitals began to use them. At first the images took hours to develop and were only used on the patients that needed it most. Even though MRI has been around for a long time, it has advanced and has been one of the best imaging modalities recently (Geva, 2006).

Radiologic Technologists use radiation to produce images of tissue, organs, and vessels that make up the body, as well as cancer, tumors, broken bones, and tumors (Cape Fear Community College). If a person is in the medical imaging field to become a Radiologic Technologist to help people, this part of the job is what grabs their attention, because as soon as they find these problems they omit the images to a doctor that helps take care of it. Radiologic Technologist is a branch of Health Science Cluster Diagnostic services pathway (OkCollegeStart). When a person’s knows where their career choice starts it helps get a better overview of where to start and helps get them where they want to be. Radiologic Technologists review and evaluate developed x-ray, videotape, or computer generated information to determine if images are “satisfactory for diagnostic purposes” (OkCollegeStart). Though if it weren’t for certain Anatomists, we may have not have had the right comprehension of the human body which could have led to errors in surgery and more deaths while treating patients. The Renaissance period was a time where Anatomists searched for clearer understanding of the human body. During the Renaissance period, Anatomists questioning and experimentation led to great discoveries of the human body.

In dentistry there is a need for taking an x-ray, the x-ray is a way to help the dentist diagnose a patients oral hygiene and to see if there are any other areas in the mouth that may need to have any type of work. The dentist or the assistant will want to make sure that they can get all the teeth possible in the radiograph (x-ray) as possible to reduce the amount of exposure to the patient. Most people will have exposure to radiation just from standing outside in the sun for a long period of time, which is what we call “background exposure”.
