INTRODUCTION
The idea of baptismal regeneration is crucial to the Gospel of Jesus Christ and it addressed by Jesus in John 3:3 while Jesus was talking to Pharisee Nicodemus and said “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” The Bible documents what the characteristics of regeneration is but how this is accomplished is not seen.
This paper will look at definition of baptismal regeneration the biblical justification surrounding baptismal regeneration; it will also look at the different doctrinal view on baptismal regeneration also the views from the early church fathers like Irenaeus, Augustine and theologian Jonathan Edwards.
WHAT IS BAPISMAL REGENERATION
For Christians the ordinance of baptism is very important because it was directed by Jesus on the eve of ascensions when commission them to “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.” It was also baptism that accompanied the ministry of Jesus before his death and resurrection (John 3:22, 26; 4:1, 2).
Baptism is also away for Christians to connect with Jesus and value of his death and the power of his resurrection. It is not just a union with Jesus but also with the Father and the Holy Spirit consequently baptism by the word of institution, signifies union with the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Within this union there takes place purification from sin that happens when one enters the baptismal water they buried in death and raised in life just like Jesus. Some see that the regeneration happens when a person enters the baptismal waters and some think the regeneration happens when the Holy Spirit indwells in a person life and the baptismal waters is just and outward sing of what the Holy Spirit is doing in one’s life and it is process that one goes through in their spiritual walk.
No matter what side someone is on in this debate one must remember that the central them in the bible from the Old Testament to the New Testament is salvation and the redemption of mankind with Jesus death on the cross and being raised from the dead. Even though some might think there is some kind of magic in a the baptismal waters and some may believe that there is not but what a Christians needs hold on to is their faith in Jesus and what he did on the cross.
