There are many people who could be considered a hero. A hero doesn’t have to be someone who could fly, run with great speed, and shoot lasers. A hero can be anyone who makes a difference. It can be your parents, a firefighter , your doctor, or even a friend. They don’t need to be a professional athlete or celebrity, they can be a normal person living a normal life. One modern day hero is Stephen Hawking because of his great accomplishments; he overcame the risks of his disease, helps scientists and improves lives of people around the world.
In order to understand why Hawking is a hero one needs to know some background knowledge. In the article “Stephen Hawking” from Biography for Beginners you learn he was born January 8th 1942 in Oxford, England. His birthday landed on the same date as the 300th anniversary of the death of Galileo, another famous scientists who studied subjects very similar to what Hawking studied. He was the oldest of four kids, had a mother and father. For most of his life he was your everyday, average student. In school his favorite subjects were always math and science. Even as a young child Hawking saw the world differently than most people. Hawking originally went to a competitive, all boy school. After he graduated from grade school he went to St. Albans then to Cambridge University. While at Cambridge in 1963 Hawking found out he had ALS. He was always worried he would not live long enough to receive his degree. By 2007 Hawking was completely paralyzed. (np).
Stephen Hawking has risked so much that makes him a hero, it even explains it in the youtube video “Mini Bio: Stephen Hawking” by Mini Bio. Once Hawking was diagnosed with ALS he was only supposed to live for few more years. When someone gets ALS th...

...lieved everyone needed to have. (Stephen Hawking). Hawking also changes lives of scientist today by adding in new discoveries. One his theories besides black holes, was on the universe. He came up with different theories about where we came from and the big bang theory. This also made him have to sacrifice his religion in order to help the world of science. (Mini bio:Stephen Hawking) Therefore Stephen Hawking has changed the lives of many different people everyday.
In conclusion Stephen Hawking may not have run into a burning building, or save someone in danger but he is still a hero. He shows great courage and bravery in his everyday life. Hawking is constantly being looked up to and admired for the difference he made in the world. Who is a hero? In contemporary times, usage of the term has become somewhat of a cliché. Over the years, the term “hero” has become representative of a wide variety of individuals, each possessing differing traits. Some of the answers put forth by my colleagues (during our in-class discussion on heroism) as to whom they consider heroes pointed to celebrities, athletes, teachers and family members. Although the occupations differed, each of their heroes bore qualities that my classmates perceived as extraordinary, whether morally or physically. Nonetheless, Webster’s defines “hero” as “a person who is admired for great or brave acts or fine qualities.” Thus, it is worth considering that individuals become heroes relative to the situation with which they’re faced.
Anyone can truly be a hero, even in real life. Heroes can be people who simply have an idea and decide to grow onto that idea and have it done. For example, Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi were real life heroes who started out as ordinary people but had a dream and made a huge difference in the end. Nelson Mandela, a Civil Rights activists, once said, “We can change the world and make it a better place. It is in your hands to make a difference” (Lazaro). Nelson Mandela was trying to say that anybody can make a difference, but it is up to that person or people to make that change. One simple change could cause any simple person to have a major change in lifestyle just because they decided to step up and do something. Furthermore, anyone can be a hero, it doesn’t matter what one’s background is, one can make even the simplest of changes and become a hero to oneself and the people around them.
Hawking is still alive and has been living with his disease for fifty-two years now (“Stephen Hawking Biography”, n.d.). In doing research as to how Hawking has been able to live so long with this disease, I came to the conclusion that there is not a reason. An article written by Terrence McCoy (2015) in the Washington Post described his lengthy life as “extraordinary” and “extremely rare”. This is further indication that his interminable existence is supported by pure luck. What an incredible coincidence that such an important man was able to withstand the consequences of a highly fatal disease. Stephen Hawking, the Hawking family, and the rest of the world are, whether they know it or not, thankful for this one man’s extreme luck. His contributions to scientific knowledge and his perseverance will be forever
According to google.com a hero is someone who “is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievments, or noble equalities.” (google.com). For example, superman , superman is an all time american classic modern hero who is admired for his courage and for saving earth multiple times from super villains. Another example of a hero is Beowulf. Beowulf was created around 1000 AD and was known far and wide throughout the lands for his selflessness, bravery, and courage .
Dr. Stephen Hawking is one of the most recognizable and influential scientists since Einstein. He was born on January 8, 1942, 300 years after the death of Galileo. As a child, he was always interested in science. He spent many days and nights looking up at the stars or making fireworks with his father. He also spent time making complicated board games with his friends (McDaniel 26-28). At the age of eight, his family moved to St. Albans, where he was enrolled at the St. Albans School. Although Hawking was not the best student, he went on to Oxford University in 1959, where he graduated with a degree in natural science three years later (Hawking 1). That same year, he went to Cambridge University to pursue his Ph.D. in cosmology, but was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s Disease (ALS) one year later, in 1963. This prompted him to work harder at his schoolwork, as he was only given two years to live. In 1965, Hawking married Jane Wilde, an undergraduate student majoring in world languages at Cambridge University. He became extremely interested in the work of Roger Penrose, a cosmologist who had just explained how black holes begin from collapsing stars (Biography.com 17). In 1974 Hawking made the discovery of Hawking radiation, which escapes from black holes. This is one of the most recognized and revolutionary discoveries in cosmology. Dr. Stephen Hawking positively changed the world scientifically and socially, despite being crippled by a deadly disease.
Not everyone may think he is a hero though. I couldn’t find any reason people thought he wasn’t a hero during my research, but some people may think that he doesn’t really care about inspiring other people. They may think he just does it for the money. This is definitely not true, however. Everything he does, such as providing health care, healthy meals, and education for disabled people, he does for free. This proves that he doesn’t care about making money from his buisness.
Joseph Campbell once proposed that, “A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself.” Over time, the ideology of the characteristics making someone a hero, has changed. The way Campbell perceives a true hero, may differ depending on who you ask. Elton John is an awe-inspiring candidate to not only be a true hero, but an epic one at that. Elton John is an award-winning pianist, singer and composer. Not only is he one of the most controversial, flamboyantly dressed celebrities out there; Sir John is also very invested in philanthropy in addition to giving gratitude. Sir Elton John is an epic hero because he is good-natured and public-spirited, he has overcome many problems, and is an indubitable leader for the LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, and Questioning) community.
At a young age, Hawking began to suffer from ALS and the disease started to deteriorate the muscles in his body, which as a result affected his mobility and speech. Hawking’s disability gave him a headway into studying deeper in the field of science. As a result, Hawking has developed many respected theorem and ideas that have changed Hawking. Hawking already possessed skills and the knowledge, but because of his hurdles of adversity he was able to develop many more theorems and ideas that are applied today.
“Sometimes I wonder if I'm as famous for my wheelchair and disabilities as I am for my discoveries.” This is just one of the many quotes said by Stephen Hawking. Stephen Hawking was born on January 8th, 1942. He is a British scientist who has done groundbreaking work in physics and cosmology. He is also an author as well as a professor at Cambridge who has written at least 131 books, the most famous of those are on the topic of black holes and general relativity. He was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) at the age of 21, and doctors gave him two or three years to live, but he is still alive today at the age of 75. In that span of time he has overcome the hindrance of his disease and physical disability to become one of the most influential physicists since Albert Einstein, and he’s also vastly expanded the knowledge available to everybody through seminars, lectures, and books. For these reasons, he qualifies as a modern-day hero.
Stephen Hawking had a troubling early life. Stephen Hawking was born on January 8, 1942 (Ferguson 21). He lived in Highgate but had to move to Oxford because London was under attack (Wikipedia.org). In 1950, his father became head of the division of parasitology at the National Institute for Medical Research (Wikipedia.org). As a result, Hawking and his family moved to St Albans, Hertfordshire (Wikipedia.org). Hawking attended St. Albans High School for Girls for a few years as younger boys were allowed to do ...
Stephen Hawking is recognized as a great warrior because though he did not physically battle, he fought against his odds to become one of the most highly regarded scientist of our time. He demonstrates great deeds of strength and courage though being a great warrior and fighting his ALS. Though his astronomical discoveries, Hawking has become a national hero by inspiring the world and changing the course of physics. A hero is a person who is admired for their courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities, and throughout his life Stephen Hawking has embodied these
Stephen Hawking is arguably the most brilliant and cunning mind living among us. His research in mathematics, philosophy, physics, and cosmology has revolutionized the way we look at our world. In addition, he writes down all of his ideas in several books making his discoveries accessible for generations to come. Born in Oxford England, Hawking attended Oxford University, The California Institute of Technology, University of Cambridge, and Gonville & Caius College. During his lectures, Hawking is seen in a complex wheelchair and talking through a computer. This is due to the unfortunate fact that he suffers from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. It is a terrible crippling disease that shuts down the nerves controlling the sufferer’s muscles. One’s lifespan after being diagnosed with this diseased tends to be cut quite short. Hawking was diagnosed with this disease when he was in his early twenties and was given about two years to live. He is now seventy two years old and doing fantastic. “Although I cannot move, and I have to speak through a computer, in my mind, I am free.” –Hawking. Hawking’s research and theories about the universe have been met with widespread appreciation as well as disagreement and anger. This is often due to Hawking’s dismissal of god and philosophy when it comes to the creation of the universe.
You also don’t have to kill anyone, conquer foreign land, or risk your life to be a hero. Anyone who influences anyone else by saving or helping save his or her lives is a hero. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. changed the lives of millions of people by bringing justice to minorities. Mahatma Gandhi, one of the greatest heroes, led a nonviolent revolution to free his country.
Do you remember when the Nazis won WWII? Neither do I. We can thank Alan Turing for that, and many other things, not least of which is computers. Turing was definitely a hero, as he was an accomplished code breaker and influential scientist. As you probably guessed, he decoded enemy messages in WWI, but also became a pioneer in the field of computers, and wrote some of the first papers on artificial intelligence.
Alan Turing was definitely a hero because his talent of mathematics and computing technology, creativity of solving problems and difficulties, courage to pioneer new fields and face the hard times in his life, unremittingness to his interests and for facing failures, and far-reaching impacts that affected the life of all of
