Introduction
“We Found Love” is a popular song produced by Calvin Harris and features singer Rihanna. “We Found Love” reached the number one spot in the top charts in multiple countries in 2012 and the music video became popular very quickly after being filmed in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The music video features a young couple living in an impoverished council estate in West Belfast. Both characters portrayed in the music video are in their twenties and of mixed race, one parent being black and the other being Caucasian. Their relationship is distinguished by domestic violence as the couple is seen yelling, pushing and hurting one another, along with stealing from convenience stores, gambling and abusing drugs and alcohol together.
The main problems with the music video and lyrics of “We Found Love” are the androcentric representation of the couple’s relationship and living arrangements and how it is justified by biological determinism along with the normalization of objectifying women and the dualism of passivity from females in active male dominated relationships.
Critical Analysis
Beginning with the lyrics in the opening scene of “We Found Love”, a female voice speaking about being in a domestic violence situation and the difficulty she is having deciding between staying with her partner or leaving. The statements; “you almost feel ashamed that someone could be that important, that without them you feel like nothing,” and “when its over, you almost wish you could have all that bad stuff back, just so you could have the good” (We Found Love, 2011) depict the power that the man has over this woman, even in situations where she is being victimized. ...s as the weaker and more helpless sex, the inequality between Caucasians and non-Caucasians as a non-Caucasian couple residing in a predominantly Caucasian area are depicted as poor, alcoholics who abuse drugs, and finally, the unnecessary objectification of females, especially in situations such as domestic violence, where they should be supported the most. The most prominent dualisms presented in the music video are rich and poor, dominance and passivity in relationships and subject and object of males and females. “We Found Love” has reached a mass audience and has not caused moral panic, outrage or controversy due to the fact that todays androcentric society justifies the classism, racism, sexism and victim blaming through biological determinism.

In our society, equality has always been a reoccurring issue. All the way from early slavery and the Holocaust to discrimination toward African Americans and same-sex marriages. As much as our world works on being equal, each culture has its differences. In Michael Jackson’s song, “Black or White” and Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ song, “Same Love,” they approach the same topic, equality. Each song is touching on the important issues of the time, racial discrimination and same-sex relationships. Both artists have the same visions on fairness and each song is just the start of how people started to change their views on these equality differences.
Love and affection is an indispensable part of human life. In different culture love may appear differently. In the poem “My god my lotus” lovers responded to each other differently than in the poem “Fishhawk”. Likewise, the presentation of female sexuality, gender disparity and presentation of love were shown inversely in these two poems. Some may argue that love in the past was not as same as love in present. However, we can still find some lovers who are staying with their partners just to maintain the relationship. We may also find some lovers having relationship only because of self-interest. However, a love relationship should always be out of self-interest and must be based on mutual interest. A love usually obtains its perfectness when it develops from both partners equally and with same affection.

The book Inequalities of Love is based on 58 open-ended interviews with college-educated black women who are 50 years old and under. Clarke collects her information by using national survey data so she can compare the experiences of reproduction, romance, and family of college-educated black women to black women without a degree, as well as white and Hispanic women with degrees. Clarke discovers that black women with degrees are less likely to get married and have sex. However, they are more likely to have an unwanted pregnancy, abortion, and have a child before marriage than college-educated white and Hispanic women. Here one can see the comparison Clarke makes with college-educated women across racial lines and African American women across social class lines. The song “Change” by J. Cole, is about his close friend, James McMillian’s who was murdered at 22 years old and learning about it when it was reported on the local news station. Throughout the song he raps about his emotional experience dealing with his friends death. In the beginning of the song he states “My intuition is telling me there’ll be better days” is him saying that he is hopeful that his grief subsides and it will eventually get easier as the days go on. Towards the end of the song he raps “I made it home, I woke up and turned on the morning news overcame with a feeling I can’t explain cause that was my brother James that was slain, he was 22.” This verse was him explaining how he heard the news that his friend was murdered.
“Over There” is a song written by George M. Cohan in 1917. Nora Bayes, Enrico Caruso, Billy Murray, Arthur Fields, and Charles King were among many who recorded the song. It was written as a propaganda piece encouraging young American men to join the army to fight in World War I. The song was incredibly popular, selling over two million copies of sheet music and one million copies of recordings by the end of the war. Cohan, the writer, was eventually even awarded a Congressional Medal of Honor for his work on this song.
At first glance, Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” would seem to be nothing more than just another vapid pop song. With its run-of-the-mill lyrics and catchy beat, it would appear that “Bad Romance” is no different from every other song on the market. However, upon closer inspection, “Bad Romance” and its music video explore the complex themes of fame, wealth, power, and freedom.
During the scene when the three girls are in a bar performing in a talent show and the filmmaker scans the venue, show that it was a ‘white’ place and the coloured girls weren’t welcomed. They were put into the corner so they were out of sight. During the talent show you see a white person performing and straight away you can tell that they aren’t talented, but when the three Aboriginal girls come up they perform a country song “Today I start lovin you again”, at the end of their performance the only person to applaud them was a child that is innocent and clearly oblivious to the racial prejudice of the society in which he is living. For example, the essay discusses the problem of there not being enough eligible Black men attending college (Henry, West, & Jackson 245). The definition of eligible could be interpreted as attending college and on a path to some sort of success. Because there is a shortage of eligible young men “Black females believe that they must succumb to the whims and pleasures of men in order to find a mate” because this is the image being shown to them when young ladies in hip hop videos do seductive things in order to gain the attention of the a male (Henry, West, & Jackson 245). One of the most terrible effects is that the music destroys black women 's self perception making it hard for young Black women to “ exhibit personal pride” (Henry, West, & Jackson 245).

Love is not simple or easy. The kind of love that will last over time and overcome each obstacle it brings is actually a fair amount of work. In the film Valentine’s Day there are all different kinds of love and some of them thrive while others fail by the end of the day. All these different relationships present an opportunity to analyze how different aspects of communication help people find love and make it last.
