Social media is affecting all spheres of life and no profession is left untouched by the impact of social media and nursing profession is no exception. Nobody can deny the benefits of social media for the profession of nursing yet its disadvantages for the registered nurses and student nurses during clinical practice cannot be ignored. “Social media can be defined as the constellation of internet-based tools that help a user to connect, collaborate, and communicate with others in real time” (Ressler & Glazer, 2010). Social media is growing at a very rapid rate and is now the mainstream communication method for most of the global population (http://www.internetworldstats.com/facebook.htm). It has brought a tremendous revolution in communication and disseminating information to nurses round the world.
Social media have provided opportunities to nurses to actively participate in events with the comfort of a home. Gone are the days when meetings were held in large assembly rooms and preparations were needed to accommodate large number of people. In voluntary organizations’ meetings people were compelled to participate in a face to face meeting after a much debated place to hold the meeting. Now participants do not need to worry to go to faraway places to attend a meeting, group discussion, class, seminar and many other events. Due to technological boom availability of the internet has increased many folds. In addition to personal computers, laptops, televisions and tablets it has even embraced mobile phones and transformed these into smart phones.

Due to technology progressing as it is social media is becoming more and more popular. Per (Williams & Hopper, 2015) “discussing your nursing shift on Facebook is not a safe practice, even if you do not use the patient’s name.” Without knowing you could be violating HIPPA when you post a picture or status. “Taking photos in patient setting on personal devices, posting patient information, including images such as photos or x-rays on social media sites” is said to violate HIPPA. (Williams & Hopper, 2015) Also, it is said that employers look at social media and your pages when they’re considering hiring you. (Williams & Hopper, 2015) As you can see using social media when in the patient setting is very dangerous as it can cost you not getting a job. Being conscious of what you post is important for your job's sake and for you and your facilities professionalism. The use of information and communication technology offers opportunities for improving patient care delivery while reducing nurses’ documentation load and increasing the time available for caring for various patient populations (Munyisia, Yu, & Hailey, 2012).
...’s video. The Registered Nurse inappropriately uses technology that restricts communication between the patient and nurse. It is seen that the RN picks up his mobile phone for a personal phone call midway through a health assessment and is also on Facebook while the patient expressed his concerns. These actions were unprofessional and from a legal standpoint, the RN did not comply with the ANMC standard 9.2. This standard reports that Registered Nurses should communicate effectively with patients to facilitate individualized care. Its importance to individual patient needs lies within research suggesting that lack of patient communication is related to decreased levels of patient compliance in their own care (Clickner, & Shirey, 2013). Effectively this leads to an attitude of mistrust towards nurses and inhibits their ability to facilitate individual patient care.

In addition, "Between February 2005 and August 2006, the use of social networking sites among young adult internet user ages eighteen and twenty-nine jumped from nine percent to forty-nine percent. The usage of social media had grown drastically.” On social media sites like these, users may develop biographical profiles, communicate with friends and strangers, do research, and share thoughts, photos, music, links, and more” (Socialnetworking.procon,2012). Social media has impacted everyone in several different ways. In this present time, majority of college student use Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Social media has a bold impact college student's grades, social interactions, and the teaching and learning process.
Informatics is known as putting data into information (Hebda & Czar, 2013). This is significant to nursing and health care because healthcare workers use informatics everyday. Through the use of technology, data is taken and transcribed into information in healthcare. I will use software to input a client’s information; I can use it to communicate with other healthcare workers and share needed information. Informatics develops my career as a nurse and helps me advance the maximum effort I can put in as a healthcare worker. Whether its using an electronic blood pressure machine or reading x-rays from a computer, informatics plays a significant role in healthcare. Throughout this paper, informatics will be discussed on how it influences nursing, changes the future of health care, and how I will play a role informatics in the future.
Nursing is an ever-changing field. There are many factors that contribute to this field’s changes such as new technologies, computerized records, or evidence-based practice among others. For this discussion purposes I have shared a prevention question about my current practice. Also, I have discussed what actions nurses can take to foster holistic nursing care in an environment where advanced technologies are used. Finally, I have critiqued my communication skills and thought of strategies to strength my weak areas.
