It was early evening on December 16, 1985. The sidewalks were jammed with people who had just flooded out of the many office buildings around East 46th Street between Second and Third Avenue. Some rushed home from work, eager to get out of the wintry gloom; others were lured by the strings of brightly colored lights into the stores for some Christmas shopping.
There in the midst of the mid-town bustle on 46th was an elegant steakhouse called Sparks whose clientele were businessmen and diplomats from the United Nations buildings a few blocks away. In the vicinity of the restaurant, several men dressed alike in fu cossack hats and trench coats loitered on both sides of the street Several other men also positioned themselves around the restaurant carefully, so they would not be noticed in the throngs of rush-ho pedestrians.

Tragedy plays an important role in narratives. This role is especially apparent in many short danger narratives. “The Boogeyman” by Stephen King, follows a man as he tries to deal with the tragic and mysterious deaths of his children. “Management of Grief” by Bharati Mukherjee follows a woman as she tries to manage the loss of her sons and tries to help others do the same. “In the Cemetery Where Al Jolson is Buried” by Amy Hempel, follows a woman spending time with her dying friend and attempting to deal with the situation. In these stories, among many others of this genre, tragedy plays a critical role in defining the story. Tragedy has become a popular device in short stories and thus must be an advantageous tool for authors. In his essay, “Interest and Truth” Gardner argues that for a narrative to work it cannot simply have meaning; it has to convey it in an interesting manner. Tragedy is an effective means of meeting both of these requirements. Tragedy satisfies the reader immediate interest by drawing him or her into the narrative while also demonstrating the importance of the author’s argument to the reader.

Even though there were many factors contributing to the Challenger disaster, the most important issue was the lack of an effective risk management plan. The factors leading to the Challenger disaster are:
The film Gotti detail’s John Gotti’s rise within the Gambino crime family. His ranks from soldier to captain to becoming the boss. Throughout the film, they concentrated on the legal trials of Gotti: one for assault and two for racketeering under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations, also known as RICO. Multiple scenes throughout the movie reflect on what we have learned in class and I will be discussing throughout the paper.
The story begins as "Don" Vito Corleone, the head of a New York Mafia "family", oversees his daughter's wedding. His beloved son Michael has just come home from the war, but does not intend to become part of his father's business. Drug dealer Virgil Sollozzo is looking for Mafia Families to offer him protection in exchange for a profit of the drug money. He approaches Don Corleone about it, but the Don is morally against the use of drugs, and turns down the offer. Being this only request Don Vito has turned down, displease Sollozzo and has the Don shot down. The Don barely survives, which leads ...
This book was about a street gang called the Mighty Vice Lords. They were the second largest gang in Chicago with about 30,000 members. The Vice Lords started in the Illinois Training center (Juvenile Correctional Facility) for boys in St. Charles Illinois during 1958 and was led by Edward “Pepalo” Perry and Alfonso Alfred. This group was known to be brutal and violent. It discussed how a violent gang can become a community organization and change the way things were done for the betterment of the community. This information is important because it showed that gangs can become a positive force.
Family Trust, making a profit, violence and being powerful, are all characteristics which the Honor Society also know as the Mafia followed and lived by. People may ask what does this all have to do with life in history, but this is all what the Mafia was based upon. “You have to be like a lion and a fox. The fox is smart enough to recognize traps, and the lion is strong enough to scare away the wolves. Be like a lion and a fox, and no one will ever beat you” Carlo Gambino. Carlo Gambino was a mafia prince and eventually he would help create the Gambino Family and set a standard for organized that no one would be able to touch or come close to. Carlo Gambino escaped being murder at all cost many thought that the reason being was because he ruled quietly. Many may ask what is the importance of Carlo Gambino and how is he tied with the Gambino Family. The Gambino Family was one of the five mafia families recognized in New York City. The Gambino Family was possibly the most recognizable and most powerful Crime Family, and may still be to this day. The Gambino family was created under another name in the 1800s and slowly evolved into what is known as the Gambino Family today. Organized Crime and Crime Families were big in New York City and controlled a lot of entities from loans, bootlegging and controlling shipping yards. With this came violence and murders due to certain Crime Families or members wanting to be in control. Throughout history the Gambino Family has always been in headlines and it shows us how money actually runs a lot of the world including government systems and other parties.
Dean O’Banion was amongst those who were getting wealthy by bootlegging alcohol. He was the leader of the North Side Gang, a group of mostly Irish gangsters, the gang Bugs Moran would be in control of later in his life. However, O’Banion wasn’t alone in Chicago. Johnny Torrio, and his right side man Al ‘Scarface’ Capone, had moved to the South Side of Chicago. They would be Bugs Moran’s bi...
The three hit men knew that they could not get into the fortress where Anastasia lived, they knew they needed to get him somewhere he felt comfortable. When he ventured into the city, he always stopped at his favorite barbershop in the Hotel Park Sheraton at Seventh Avenue and Fifty-Fifth Street for a shave and a trim. On October 25, 1957 at 10:15am the Gallo brothers entered the shop and, as the barber was covering Anastasia’s face with a towel and lowering his chair, shot five shots at Anastasia’s head and back. Miraculously, Anastasia, with his last ounce of life, lunged at the killers, but only hit the mirror in front of him. When the news of Albert Anastasia’s death reached the four other bosses of New York, they knew that Vito Genovese would now be making a move to be in charge of the Mafia’s ruling body, the Commission. Carlo Gambino too knew this and was determined to make a power play of his own. To decide who would be the leader, Genovese decided to call a gathering that notably became the largest Cosa Nostra reunion in history. In attendance there was nearly one-hundred bosses, underbosses, caporegimes, and labor officials all called on upon by Genovese who hope to be voted in as “boss of bosses”. The meeting was to be held on the giant estate of Joseph Barbara, near the village of Apalachin on November 14, 1957. The higher-ups of La Cosa Nostra were to discuss who was to take over for Anastasia, how to put a stop to the violent changes of leadership that had been occurring, a discussion on membership into the Mafia and finally, revise the Cosa Nostra’s drug policy, due to the federal government passing “the Narcotics Control Act of 1956 which created the most punitive and repressive anti-narcotics legislation ever adop...

Lucky Luciano and John Gotti are two of the most polarizing and well-known figures of the US mafia over the past 100 years. Both men were the main man in their ‘families’ when they were alive. They were always in the news whether it was for their trials, or for things prosecutors said they committed. In this paper, I will try to see if the New York Times changed their language when referring to the mafia or mobsters in the time of Lucky Luciano between the 1930s and 1950s to more respectful or neutral terms in the time of John Gotti in the 1980s and 1990s. I will do this by looking at the newspaper articles from their lives and see if any of the language had changed over the 50-60 years. Luciano was the first new world gangster, he liked money more than old Sicilian rivalries, and he was the influence of many future mobsters including John Gotti. Both men lived very wealthy lives, with Luciano living in the Waldorf-Astoria and Gotti dining in elegant restaurants.
Since the disaster always happen fast without forecasting. A key effect for emergency architecture is to respond to the need as soon as possible. This determines when designing an emergency architecture, how to provide a fastest way of construction is quite important. A proposal for the whole construction process, from material, structure to the construction procedures all needed to be settled as soon as possible.
