The film Gotti detail’s John Gotti’s rise within the Gambino crime family. His ranks from soldier to captain to becoming the boss. Throughout the film, they concentrated on the legal trials of Gotti: one for assault and two for racketeering under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations, also known as RICO. Multiple scenes throughout the movie reflect on what we have learned in class and I will be discussing throughout the paper. The film’s opening scene is of Frank LoCascio asking John Gotti questions and speaking on his behalf of what it means to be in a crime family. Note, this is after he is sentenced to life in prison. Castellano wants to do something about it because Gotti is causing attention to the family. He wants to whack Gotti and his crew. A good reason for doing so is because Angie is dealing drugs and Paul says a rule is a rule, “deal or die.” Gotti finds out about Castellano and his plan to whack him, so he arranges the murder of Castellano in front of Spark’s Steakhouse restaurant. In order to do so, Gotti has to have the full commissions permission. In the process, Dellacroce passes away which will make Gotti the boss. Gotti elects Sammy as the underboss. The FBI find a way to get into the apartment and bug the place. Gotti and Franky LoCascio discuss the business that Sammy is running and how much money he is making. Also, talk about whacking Sammy for being selfish with the businesses. The FBI get everything they said on tape which was enough to arrest Gotti. The FBI and police pull up to the hang out spot and arrest Gotti, Sammy Gravano, and Franky LoCascio. Sammy listens to tape and knows he is screwed because Gotti is wants him dead. He then goes to the FBI and makes a plea deal to spill everything about the family, if he can get a lesser sentence and be in the witness protection program, “if I talk, I walk.” This works and Gotti gets sentenced to life in prison without parole for racketeering and murder.
