The history of self-publishing has been filled many failures and some very notable successes. Some authors that have been successful through self-publishing are Walt Whitman, Virginia Woolf, Gertrude Stein, and Edgar Allan Poe. Many marvelous stories would never have been published if their authors had not become self-publishers. Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain and the Tarzan series by Edgar Rice Burroughs would never been known if the authors had not taken matters into their own hands (Ross & Ross, 1985, p. 4-5).
Unfortunately, when librarians think of self-publishing, they have the tendency to think of vanity publishing otherwise known as subsidy publishing. Vanity publishers will publish anything including things that only the author and maybe a handful of their family or friends want to read. They are not interested in whether or not it is commercially viable or not because the author, not them, is responsible for all the production, distribution and promotion costs. The vanity publisher merely takes the manuscript and turns into a book usually for a very stiff fee. People who go to vanity publishers generally do not expect to sell their works (Chickadel, 1980, p. 16-17). However, in self-publishing even though the author pays all the costs like in vanity publishing they not only write the book they arrange for the design, printing, marketing, and distribution. In addition, although there are some people who attempt to self-publish who should not, most of them that do self-publish do so expecting to make money. Therefore, if they self-publish the chances are that they go in believing that they have a marketable product (Chickadel, 1980, p. 17-18).
Many authors cannot be published through traditional publishing companies, de...

Almost twenty years later, contemplating the contemporary American publishing scene, I feel a Bealean rage coming on (and with it a vague longing for one of his fits). While three percent of the American population in 1976 would have been a little over six million readers, recent surveys suggest that the consistent buyers of books in this country now total no more than half that number, and may even be as few as one million.[1]
As a child, Ray Bradbury loved to read fantasy novels. Inspired by his favorite writers, he longed to become a fantasy writer himself. Bradbury lived during the Great Depression with very little money, therefore he could not put himself through school. Instead, Bradbury went to the library every other day for ten years. During this time, he realized that he wanted to pursue his dream of becoming a writer. To get money, Bradbury started publishing his works in a newspaper. Because he wanted practice, he used several pseudonyms to make it look like he had several authors publishing their stories in his newspaper, but in fact, it was written entirely by Bradbury himself. “Bradbury uses [his] stories not only to entertain, but to cause readers to think about their own lives” (Clark, Tracy). He focused more on the message of his story than the popularity of it. “When ask...

"It is one of the blessings of this world that few people see visions and dream dreams" (Hurston). An author, especially during the Harlem Renaissance which immediately followed World War One, is someone who took their dream, acted upon it, and made it into something tangible on paper. An author takes their thoughts and creates something beautifully unique each and every time. Being an author takes a lot of strength in order to find your place in the overpopulated industry of up and coming authors-to-be. In any industry, not just writing, it takes a while to find one's special voice and style. A well respected author of the Harlem Renaissance, Zora Neale Hurston wrote
America's greatest and most influential authors developed their passion for writing due to cataclysmic events that affected their life immensely. The ardent author Richard Wright shared similar characteristics to the many prominent American authors, and in fact, attained the title of most well-known black author of America. Richard Wright created many important pieces of literature, that would impact America's belief of racial segregation, and further push the boundaries of his controversial beliefs and involvements in several communist clubs. Wright's troubled past begins as a sharecropper while only a child. His childhood remained dark and abandoned.
Famous writers are everywhere, but what are the writers famous for. People may know Alice Walker as a famous writer, but what was she famous for? When I asked people questions about Alice Walker, some can only give some vital statistics and some will just shrug their shoulder and say, “I don’t know.” In my research paper I will be giving some brief facts about Alice Walker and I will also be answering some questions. Questions like “What did Alice Walker do to make her a famous writer?” “What obstacles did she have to go through to become a popular writer?” and “How is Alice Walker doing now?” These are some of the most frequently asked questions and I will be answering them in this research paper.

Young Cormier never imagined that he would one day be a writer; he believed writers only came from wealthy important families. He was not born into wealth or fame; he worked hard in order to obtain jobs that would one day make him a famous author. The legacy he created did not leave with him, it remains in each of his thrilling books.

My favorite authors have written extremely personal books about their own lives and experiences. One of my favorite authors, Nic Sheff, writes about his experiences through addiction, and the recovery process. His father,my other favorite author, David Sheff, also writes about addiction; but in the prospect of an outsider who has a loved one go through it. They don 't know but the books they wrote helped me grow so much as a person. It gave me closure to see different perspectives. Their books were completely raw, there were no parts that were sugarcoated about addiction. I have a pretty good story to tell and I know I could change some people 's lives if I shared it. I would want to start the book once I am settled into my career. So I can have a couple different perspectives of my own in the book, maybe share views of how I thought the job would be. And the after comparison of how it turned out. Another legacy I am seriously considering is trying to establish my own organization. I am already really active within my community. I have over 300 hours of community service and it has not stopped there. I think giving back is very important in life because some of us have been very blessed while others have suffered hard inimaginable lives. The organization I would like to leave behind would be to homeless people. I have done some research and a
