Research report Tigers Tigers are powerful and adaptable animals. To some they are regarded as a deity. Cubs learn quickly to become skilled hunters in order to survive. Despite their best efforts they are in danger of extinction. Since ancient times the tiger has been revered as a deity in legends and myths of Asia. Its name is synonymous with valour and power. Myths of tigers grew in art and folklore. As a result the tiger’s body parts came to be perceived as cure-all remedies among medicine men of the orient. In Korea the tiger is deified as a mountain spirit and king of the beasts. In Java and Bali ancient kings were believed to assume the form of tigers and live in sacred caves(Ullas Karanth). Tigers are enormous and powerful creatures. They are the largest cat in the world. They use their bone crushing teeth to kill animals twice their size, such as buffalo. They usually weigh between 200 and 700 pounds. They can survive in many different climates, from humid rain forests to the snowy mountains of the Himalayas. They are warm blooded mammals covered with fur. They also have a vertebrae, which means they have a backbone. They have extremely powerful legs that help them run up to 35 mph, but only for short periods of time. They also help them to jump as high as 15ft. and as far as 32ft. Their paws are padded so they can move quietly through the jungle. Each paw has sharp, long claws that are about 4 inches and are retractable when they are not using them. Unlike other cats, tigers love to swim, they use their big paws to move through the water. Tigers need to eat a lot to survive; it is not unusual for them to eat over one hundred pounds in a week. The gestation period for the Siberian tiger is between three and three and a half months and the litter usually consists of two to six cubs. There are only 400-500 of them left in the world so they are considered endangered, This is due to poaching illegally and loss of habitat. They have breeding program to try to boost the population so they do not go extinct. Tigers are creatures who are skilled, powerful, and revered by many societies. Cubs learn quickly in order to survive. Like other tigers, Siberian tigers are skilled hunters. Though there are many different species they remain endangered.
