Pursuit of Purpose

Everyone has a “verse;” the story of their life and what they wish to accomplish throughout it. I have had big goals for myself to accomplish ever since a young age. In most cases, this has been very beneficial to me throughout my life. But sometimes, it has caused me a lot of grief. Since this is such a large part of my life, I have many songs that I feel represent this journey.
Since the first time I heard it, I have loved “The Best Day,” a song Taylor Swift wrote for her mom. My mom and I have always had a super close relationship, and she has been there for every up and down. The lines “I’m thirteen now and don’t know how my friends could be so mean, I come home crying and you hold me tight and grab the keys” represent a difficult time in my life. As with most girls, I had a really rough time with friends during elementary and middle school. While I lost old friends and gained new friends, there were quite a few days in between when I would come home crying. But no matter what happened, I always knew I could count on my mom to make the bad days the best days.
The song “Somebody that I Used to Know” by Gotye also relates to a situation with a friend during this time. We had been best friends since we were babies, but as we grew older, she became competitive and just plain mean. For years, I had several negative incidences my “best friend.” We are no longer friends because I couldn’t take the emotional stress the friendship was putting on my life; now she’s “just somebody that I used to know.” During our middle school years, she tried to tear me down as much as possible. Something I was interested in was “stupid,” but then she would turn around to do it and make it seem like it was her idea. The line “No you didn’t have to sto...

I feel that my goals and involvement can positively contribute to society. In “O Me! O Life!,” Walt Whitman mentions how most members of society seem to just “go with the flow” and hope they will stumble upon a purpose in life. I believe everyone has a positive purpose in life, but it is their choice if they find it or not. This purpose is not something one will “stumble” upon. Situations and seeking out the purpose is the only way to find out what it is. I believe that from my experiences, my purpose, the verse I will contribute to society, with be to help others. I didn't know how my friends could be so mean,
And I still don’t know at seventeen.
When I’m just somebody that they use to know,
They realize they didn’t have to stoop so low.
