The Pros and Cons of the Implementation of the E-Cigarette

Adapting behavior change interventions to meet the needs of cigarette smokers, who participate in risky behavior, has the potential to enhance the overall health of the smoker through the implementation of e-cigarette technology. However, because there is little guidance on how best to undertake these adaptations, work in this field has proceeded without any firm foundations. Conflicting literature reviews of e-cigarette technology has caused disunity among consumers and has left various stakeholders including medical professionals, government officials, and advocacy groups unsure if they should accept this product as an acceptable alternative or retort its frivolous use. This article will analyze the pros and cons of the implementation of the e-cigarette as a tool to deliver behavior change interventions to demographically diverse populations in Europe as an alternative to smoking the “traditional cigarette.” This analysis will gauge if public health authorities should ban utilization of e-cigarettes in the public environment.

A literature review of e-cigarette technology and individual’s perceptions took place in Pubmed and Science Direct. In effort to acquire qualitative information on the e-cigarette, three 40 minute long surveys on perceptions of e-cigarette technology, the affect on the individuals and societies health, and the longevity of this tool were utilized to frame the ensuing research. Respondents included individuals living in Europe between the ages of 27 to 35 years old, with different motivations for using or abstaining from e-cigarette technology.
