The purpose of this paper is to better understand the needs of the homeless population and how the library can best help them. In this paper I am also examining problem patrons, who may or may not be homeless, as well as some ways that librarians have come up with to deal with them. Each homeless patron has unique needs which can be anything from help with substance abuse to having some help getting a GED. The two most important roles that a library has in the life of a homeless person is a place to get the information and help that they need to better their lives and a safe and comfortable environment. A place to find a book and enter into a new world even if for just a short time may be the best thing and perhaps the only thing that a library can do for their homeless population. Libraries need to focus on training staff on what the homeless population for their area require and how to meet those requirements. The libraries also need to identify and fulfill the needs of their particular patrons in programming and policy. Introduction and Overview The focus of this paper is research that has been done in a number of articles about the problem patron specifically the homeless patron. One of the questions that this article is trying to answer is what the needs of the homeless patron are and how libraries can fill those needs. Even though this study is primarily focused on the homeless patron it also examines the emotional labor that librarians go through when they deal with problem patrons. Librarians like other employees who work with the public must put on a professional face when at work. This face was created to hide the more negative reactions that librarians experience when being confronted by an aggressive or annoying ... ... middle of paper ... ...erging Adult Homeless in Two U.S. Cities. Homelessness is a social issue that has been overlooked for too long. It can be observed in many states worldwide. The rising population of homeless people affects those characterized as homeless, their families subjected to the lifestyle, and the communities where homelessness exists. There are many solutions but only a few will be discussed. Improving existing shelters and building new shelters are general solutions. More in depth solutions within the shelters include programs that assist the homeless with opportunities for re-entry into the community. I would first like to discuss reasons why this issue should be looked into and conclude with recommendations.
The ability to focus on providing the basic needs and services for the homeless is critical. In addition, applying information technology to obtain these require services would be a requirement. The aging can also become homeless individuals. Critical thinking and ethical behavior will prompt success for managing the homeless population.
When we think of homelessness, we often think of people middle aged and older. For many years now, the problem has become more real to the younger generation. Some are there by choice but still, many are there because of circumstances beyond their control. In the report written by Eleanor J. Bader, she uncovers some of the faces of homeless people that just happen to be college students. According to Mary Jean LeTendre, who was interviewed in the report, “no college has ever asked for help in reaching homeless students” (638).
...on the homeless community. I previously held preconceived notions that the homeless consisted of people who were either unable to connect and form relationships with others or didn’t desire to do so. Yet, I observed most everyone greeting one another and reminiscing with those who have been absent from the community for a while, as well as, expressing concern for those missing. I recognized that the homeless may live in a non-traditional way, but they have established their own communities and are successful in forming and maintaining cohesive relationships.

Education is also a fundamental thing that people need to gain. It helps in many aspects. Financing Employment Programs for Homeless People reported that the first aspect, it helps in making the society more educated instead of making half of them educated. This will help the homeless people with the mental health by making use their effort on things that will benefit them in the future. According to Huffpost Impact in the subject of Library Offers Homeless People Mental Health Services, and Its Work, mentioned that they have done blood tests on some homeless people, and they found that some of them have higher blood pressure that could harm their lives (Libraries are often the safest place for homeless people, 2016). Also, Esguerra has met with a homeless person and found that this person was doing a full clinical assessment. Then she has shown the homeless person colleagues at the San Francisco homeless outreach team, and then they have provided case management and housing. According to the article, San Francisco has about 6,600 homeless people has started something trend. City Lab (2016) indicated that homeless visitors receive various types of support in different libraries. Esguerra added that the programs are “ Humanizing homelessness throughout the library, and the library becomes a sanctuary for many of the patrons and our program helps them to feel safe
Although most people know what homelessness is and it occurs in most societies, it is important to define because the forces of displacement vary greatly, along with the arrangement and meaning of the resulting transient state. The Stewart B McKinney Homeless Assistance Act of 1987 defined a homeless person as “an individual who lacks a fixed, regular, and adequate night-time residence or a person who resides in a shelter, welfare hotel, transitional program or place not ordinarily used as a regular sleeping accommodation, such as streets, cars, movie theaters, abandoned buildings, etc.” Resent surveys conducted in the U.S. have confirmed that the homeless population in America is extremely diverse and includes representatives from all segments of society, including: the old and young, men and women, single people and families, city dwellers and rural residents, whites and people of color, employed and unemployed, able workers and people with serious health problems. The diversity among people that are homeless reflects how difficult it is to generalize the causes of homelessness and the needs of homeless people. Robert Rosenheck M.D., the author of Special Populations of Homeless Americans, explains the importance of studying homelessness based on subgroups, “each subgroup [of homeless people] has unique service needs and identifying these needs is critical for program planning and design.” Despite these diversities, homelessness is a devastating situation for all that experience it. Not only have homeless people lost their dwelling, but they have also lost their safety, privacy, control, and domestic comfort.
Many believe that a common thread among the homeless is a lack of permanent and stable housing. But beyond that, the factors leading to homelessness and the services that are needed are unique according to the individual. To put them into one general category ? the homeless- suggests that people are homeless for similar reasons and therefore a single solution is the answer. Every homeless person shares the basic needs of affordable housing, adequate incomes and attainable healthcare. But a wide range of other unmet needs cause some people to become or remain homeless which include drug treatment, employment training, transportation, childcare and mental health services (Center 8.)

Homelessness is one of the biggest issues society (Unites States) faces today. Homelessness is caused by lack of affordable housing, economic situations and decline in federal funding for low income families and the mentally ill. A homeless person is defined as an individual who lacks housing (without regard to whether the individual is a member of a family) including an individual whose primary residence during the night is a supervised public or private (shelters) facility that provides temporary living accommodations and an individual who is a resident in transitional housing. This definition of housing is used by the U.S Department of Healt...
Many people debate on weather homeless people should receive guidance or just be abandoned. Do homeless people deserve our service and to be supported, or are they just lazy individuals trying to take advantage of people? Homelessness is a growing dispute in cities. It has became an extensive problem for the community. Homelessness can not and should not be ignored. The number of homeless people in the United States is quickly growing. It seems like no one cares to help them. Even our heroes like police officers show no sympathy towards the homeless. “Homeless people appeared on the streets of Bucharest in 1990. Since then, their number and the problems created by this phenomenon have steadily increased in all major
