Pro-Choice Doesn't Mean Pro-Abortion

Under the 14th Amendment's "personal liberty", women are given the right to obtain an abortion. Almost 50% of all pregnancies in this country are unintended, including over 30% within marriage. And over half of all unplanned pregnancies end in abortion. Improved access to contraception would address the source causes of unintended pregnancy and would diminish the need for abortion, but not abolish the choice.

A widespread misconception with the pro-life, pro-choice dispute is that pro-choice means “for abortion”. Pro-choice plainly means women have the right to chose what they want and no one can chose for them. “I have met thousands and thousands of pro-choice men and women. I have never met anyone who is pro-abortion."-Hillary Clinton. The pro choice debate wants to make it apparent to people they are not fighting for abortions; they are fighting for the right to be able to have abortions. As only women can get pregnant, and therefore only women have abortions, a male legislator has no right to vote on an abortion related law. Every woman has the right to make her own choice and it should continue in that manner. If you're opposed to abortion, don't have one, but don't try to impose your morality on others. Abortion is a personal choice between a woman and her doctor. Instead of making abortion more complicated and treacherous for women, lawmakers should promote policies that reduce the need for abortion.

The mother decides when the fetus is a “human” and only the mother. No one else gets to make that pronouncement Pro lifers believe that it’s okay to force someone to be pregnant even if they’ve been raped, the fetus could have problems, or the fetus could kill the mother. Forcing someone to be pregnant is wrong, it’s their own choice.

If you get nothing else out this essay I hope you learned that pro choice doesn’t mean pro abortion, it means let women choose what to do with their own bodies. Abortion is a tough choice and the decision should be a personal one, without interference of government. Abortion can continue to be safe as long as its legal and in a hospital, making it illegal would cause more problems than it would solve.
