Pro-choice versus pro-life argues over the issue of what should be the right stance when dealing with the life of an unborn child. From the perspective of a person who is pro-choice, they believe that “individuals have unlimited autonomy with respect to their own reproductive systems, just as long as they don’t violate the independence of others.” Pro-choice also argues that the government should not have the right to decide whether a woman should exterminate her pregnancy or not. From their viewpoint, they believe that what should be legal in the eyes of the government is contraception use, celibacy, abstinence, and abortion for the first two trimesters of pregnancy. One of the first states to prohibit the practice of abortion was Connecticut in 1821. They wanted many places who performed these practices to restrict using toxic material to cause abortions. After this law passed, many states followed in suit. The next ruling to pass was the Comstock law in 1873. This law banned materials that were relative to abortion and contraception from being passed out to women. During the Great Depression in the 1930s, the rate of illegal abortions have increased. Many women did not want to have the burden of having a child during economic stress within the country. Due to many doctors practicing dangerous abortions, the number of death tolls were high. By the 1940s, the death toll had declined. During the 1950s, hospitals within the country started to decide if doctors should perform abortion by using therapeutic abortion boards, allowed by law only if the mother’s life was in any danger. In 1970, the states, Alaska, Hawaii, New York, and Washington annulled their anti- abortion laws allowing licensed physicians to perform abortions. In order for women to get an abortion in these states, they had to be at least a resident of these states for about thirty days. New York was the only state out of these not requiring any source of residency, so many women traveled to this state to get a legal abortion.
