Passion is a word of spirit, heart, and the will to do something that a person truly loves. How far does passion drive someone? “Joe always knew that they way he lived and worked might someday be the death of him, but he wanted no other life” (James 239). There are many whose passions have been a lifelong ambition with great success and other whose passions have brought great success at the expense of their lives.
Joe was a herpetologist that studied a variety of snakes, including venomous snakes, a dangerous line of work, work that he loved. Joe and his research group went to Burma, to find new species of snake (James 164). “…Hkakabo Razi National Park, in his search for herpetofauna” (James 164). It was in this country where he was bitten by a many-banded Crate and died (James 217). It is difficult to understand how trained professionals, can be killed by animals of which they have such vast knowledge. Is it complaisance, carelessness or is it acceptable risk for doing something that one loves?
