Passion and commitment is important to have to be able succeed as an individual. The short story “The Broken Globe” by Henry Kreisel presents a story with a son and father who are very passionate with their beliefs but have two different perspectives of the world. Kreisel suggests that although passion and commitment can benefit to an individual's’ success, being too blindly involved can narrow the individual's’ thoughts and and attitude leading them to ruin a relationship. This idea is developed through Nick as his passion initially brings him to have a successful career but he is focused too much on his passions that it blindly influences his thoughts and attitude which fractures the relationship with his father. It took a amount of time for Nick to understand his father’s perspective. After a year or two of Nick studying at school or university, he realizes “that the shape of the world” that his father “lives in[,] has been forever fixed”(126). It is a moment of realization for Nick and he struggles to acknowledge his father’s beliefs and would like him to listen to the science facts behind his beliefs. Not only did Nick struggle to understand his father, but also he fought with the stubbornness. When his father “once believed something, it was hard to shake him”(125). Once his father believes in what he has heard or seen, Nick can not display another perspective which creates a tension between the relationship. Furthermore, Mr.Solchuk is single-minded and it makes it difficult for Nick to have a relationship with him. As Nick describes his father, “he never forgot and he never forgave” anyone who goes against him or contradicts his religious beliefs (125). Mr.Solchuk secludes himself from the new generation and his mind is set in the medieval time period and does not want to adapt to a newer
