Intelligence Quotient (IQ) tests are common all over the world. The tests were initially conducted on young children mostly at the kindergarten age to measure their cognitive abilities in relation to others of the same age in a bid to ascertain the level of attention the pre-scholars would require from teachers upon joining school. In modern times, these tests are carried out on adults for different reasons such as for fun/general knowledge or to determine the best candidate for a job or academic purposes. It tests several aspects of personality and this paper identifies two IQ tests and develops sample questions for them in an academic setting.

Introduction

Intelligence quotient, commonly referred to as IQ is a general measure of a person’s cognitive ability. It is measured by using a standardized test that is given to a homogenous group. The general believe is that people belonging to the same age, profession or under the same environmental conditions have a relatively same level of intelligence which in turn affects a person’s success in different areas of life. Personality tests are used in many areas today to assess a person’s suitability for a particular position. For instance, many employers are using personality tests to gauge a candidate’s ability to handle aspects of a job and to determine how long the applicant is likely to stay on the job. This is greatly assisting human resource managers to control the employee turnover rates.

Personality tests on university degree applicants

Another sector where IQ/ personality testing has picked up is in the admission of new students to colleges. The admissions boards in many colleges assess the personalities of students to determine their possibility to succeed in academics and especially in the area/course they have enrolled. The aim is to determine predictors of success and capacity before admission (Romanelli, F. et al, 2006). An IQ test for college/university is likely to test aspects of personality such as commitment, social maturity, self awareness, persistence, interest in school and willingness to study.

Commitment is probably the single most important measure of a person’s ability to success. Successful people are those that pledge their efforts and resources to a certain course and practice consistency in following or carrying out that course. Commitment leads to persistence in playing an active role in accomplishing one’s tasks in a bid to meet pre-established goals. In an academic setting, committed students are the ones who stick it out when things are tough and hence do not consider quitting.
