SARS
It has been a tough week for my family and I. It is no longer safe for us to go outside. Last month, I noticed that the Taipei General Hospital located two blocks from my house has been taped off. At first, I didn't understand why all the sick children and elders were not seeking medical treatment there. As days went by, brother and I started taking a different route to school and I no longer saw any activity of patients and doctors going in and out of the hospital.
At school, our teacher discussed the new lessons for the next few weeks to us, and told us to work on our lesson book each day. She told us that we were excused from school and that we would not be attending classes until it was safe to do so.
The daily news on television is now filled with stories about the quarantine of major hospitals in Taipei city and other hospitals in northern Taiwan. The outbreak of an airborne disease called SARS has infected and killed several Taiwan citizens.
SARS is short for severe acute respiratory syndrome. Big Aunt (Da Yi) says SARS originally came from China. Th...
So, in the 30s and 40s they used to send tuberculosis patients to the [Glenn Dale] hospital for treatment. [normal relaxed tone] Eventually it was converted into an insane asylum and it became notorious for its treatment of patients. The staff experimented on the patients and locked them up all day. One day, all the patients revolted and the doctors ran out of the hospital and boarded up all the doors and windows. [talking faster] The patients were left inside to die and the hospital was abandoned. The insane still wander the halls. Today, if you sneak in the hospital you will be chased by the ghosts of the patients and catch tuberculosis. My friend went there and swears he saw a ghost watching him from the shadows, and he won’t go near that place anymore [gestures with hand in horizontal motion]. The cops arrest anyone they catch trespassing, but they say the cops won’t go in the hospital after you if you need help.”
The U.S.’s relationship with Cuba has been arduous and stained with mutual suspicion and obstinateness, and the repeated U.S. interventions. The Platt agreement and Castro’s rise to power, served to introduce the years of difficulty to come, while, the embargo the U.S. placed on Cuba, enforced the harsh feelings. The two major events that caused the most problems were the Bays of Pigs and Cuban Missile Crisis.
1. The contrast between Cottard and the other characters is that while everyone else is in constant fear of catching the plague and doing everything they can to fight the disease, Cottard is cheerful in the fact that the plague has put a stop to the police investigating his mysterious crime . Cottard probably also enjoys the camaraderie of everyone else finally being in the same position as he is.

Whichever path one chooses to take, they must have a bachelor 's degree and obtain a nursing license. To get a nursing license in the first place, one must graduate from an approved nursing program plus one must pass the National Council Licensure Examination. Generally students will take classes in anatomy, chemistry, nutrition and a few others while they 're in school (Bureau5). Along with becoming an RN, one would typically land a lower (but still good) job, because the employers know how advancement works. If one were to show that they have experience, work well, and continue to further their education they will generally be promoted up a position with more responsibilities, and sometimes better pay (Bureau 6). Many suggest to further one 's education as new equipment, technology, and illnesses are discovered. Upcoming RNs should register to complete the NCLEX-RN examination, which is an online test with about 120 questions, there 's only a passing rate of 70-75% (Jones
There are three different ways to become a nurse. You can become a Diploma Nurse, which are programs that are offered by hospital owned and operated schools of nursing. “Employees in these occupations usually need one or two years of training involving both on-the-job experience and informal training with experienced workers.”(INFOhio). These programs will teach you the minimum training that you need to qualify for a Registered Nurse license, however, this is the quickest and cheapest way to become a RN.
A few years before 1918, in the height of the First World War, a calamity occurred that stripped the globe of at least 50 million lives. (Taubenberger, 1918) This calamity was not the death toll of the war; albeit, some individuals may argue the globalization associated with the First World War perpetuated the persistence of this calamity. This calamity was referred to the Spanish Flu of 1918, but calling this devastating pestilence the “Spanish Flu” may be a historical inaccuracy, as research and historians suggest that the likelihood of this disease originating in Spain seams greatly improbable. Despite it’s misnomer, the Spanish Flu, or its virus name H1N1, still swept across the globe passing from human to human by exhaled drops of water that contained a deadly strand of RNA wrapped with a protein casing. Individuals who were unfortunate enough to come in contact with the contents of the protein casing generally developed severe respiratory inflammation, as the Immune system’s own response towards the infected lung cells would destroy much of the lungs, thus causing the lungs to flood with fluids. Due to this flooding, pneumonia was a common cause of death for those infected with Spanish Flu. Due its genetic similarity with Avian Flu, the Spanish Flu is thought to be descended from Avian Flu which is commonly known as “Bird Flu.” (Billings,1997) The Spanish Flu of 1918 has had a larger impact in terms of global significance than any other disease has had because it was the most deadly, easily transmitted across the entire globe, and occurred in an ideal time period for a disease to happen.
There are different education paths you can take depending on whether you get a diploma from an approved nursing program, you’re getting an associate’s degree in nursing (AND), or a bachelor of science degree in nursing (BSN) (USBL). Only certain high schools, trade colleges, and professional schools offer a diploma certificate (DifferenceBetween). I do know that to get an associate’s degree it usually takes about two years and to get a bachelor’s of science degree, it takes about four years. There are many courses that have to be taken in the programs. Some of the ones I didn’t know were required is chemistry, nutrition, microbiology, and sciences in liberal arts (USBL). However, I do know you had to take physiology, psychology, anatomy, and behavioral sciences like sociology. These classes are required along with your clinical hours in the
The staff, physicians and board members were not ready to fail. They didn’t want to abandon all those who depended on their services, but they also knew closing the hospital's doors would hurt

The Flu is the common name influenza which is a virus that attacks the respiratory system. The flu virus releases its genetic information into the cells nucleus to replicate itself. When the cell dies, those copies are released and they affect other cells throughout the rest of the body. With that happening the virus weakens the immune system. When your sick with the flu, your body builds up a defense by making antibodies against it. The flu virus spreads through air when a person coughs, sneezes, or speaks.
Registered nurses also must be licensed.” (Occupational Outlook Handbook). BSN programs take about four years to complete. ADN and diploma programs take two to three years to complete. Bachelor degree programs also include further education in the social and physical sciences, communication, and critical thinking. A bachelor’s degree or higher is required for administrative positions, consulting, research, and teaching. Most registered nurses with an ADN or diploma choose to go back to school to earn a bachelor 's degree through an RN-to-BSN program. "There are three basic kinds of training programs that you may choose from to become a registered nurse; associate 's degree, diploma, and a bachelor 's degree. Deciding on which of the three training programs to pursue depends on your career goal." (Ferguson’s Career Guidance Center) A bachelor 's degree in nursing is
Measles Measles is a highly contagious disease. It is caused by an RNA virus that changes constantly. Measles symptoms usually include a bad cough, sneezing, runny nose, red eyes, sensitivity to light, and a very high fever. Red patches with white grain like centers appear along the gum line in the mouth two to four days after the first symptoms show. These patches are called Koplik spots because Henry Koplick first noticed them in 1896.
Evacuation plans and fire exits are also noticeable in the hospital. This shows that the health system provides therapeutic care and holistic care to the staffs, patients and visitors. It is a hazard sign that alerts everyone to know where to go. For example, if there are fire, with the evacuation plan and fire exits it will help the staffs, patients and visitors to know what to do and where to assemble. So it a clear procedure for everyone to evacuate the building in a safe manner during
All states require students to graduate from an accredited nursing program and pass the national licensing exam. Register nurses can follow three educational paths: a bachelor’s of science in nursing (BSN), an associate’s degree in nursing (ADN) and a nursing diploma. BSNs typically take four years to complete, ADNs can take between 2-3 years, and diplomas are administered at hospitals and take about 3 years. Any of the programs will qualify you for an entry-level position but nurses with diplomas and ADN usually en...
