1. Introduction:
In Hong Kong, the problem of obesity is quite serious. According to the Population Health Survey 2003/2004 commissioned by The Department of Health, around 18% of the population aged 15 and above were overweight and around a quarter of the population were obese. [1] In spite of this, in order to tackle this problem effectively, the causes of the problem will be evaluated and the different preventative measures will be suggested in this report.
2. Main reasons for obesity in Hong Kong:
2.1. Nutrition:
Nowadays, there is quite a lot of working women. They have to sacrifice their time on cooking in order to work. Hence, they prefer to choose fast foods as their meals because these foods are generally cheap, tasty and widely available. But these foods are usually energy-dense and nutrition-poor. [1] For example, an average meal in a fast food restaurant provides 1,000 to 2,000 kilocalories, which is the recommended daily calories intake for adults. [1] In long term, persistent intake of those foods in every meal may lead to obesity.
2.2. Physical Activity:
Hong Kong has a well-developed transportation network. People can go everywhere conveniently by taking public transportations or driving private cars. At home, many people nowadays are enjoying more sedentary pursuits like TV viewing. Due to the prevalence of public transport and the increase of sedentary leisure pursuits, the opportunities for people to do exercise diminishes. It is estimated that around 17% of the adults are lack of doing physical activities. [1] A study has claimed that there is an inverse relationship between BMI and physical activity. [2]
2.3. Busy Lifestyle:
Hong Kong is a prosperous yet hustle city. Most of the people living in Hong Kong have a busy lifestyle. They have to work around the clock while having less time to rest. According to a survey published on the International Journal of Obesity, people who sleep less than six hours and work more than 9 hours had the highest BMI. [2] It shows that reduced sleeping hours and long working hours maybe the factors leading to obesity.
3. Preventative measures that can be taken:
3.1. Diet
People usually have a misunderstanding that in order to keep fit, they have to eat less. Some of them may choose to skip their breakfasts but that is incorrect. Breakfast is essential [3], as it provides nutrients for the whole day. Moreover, people should limit the intake of high-calorie foods and foods which are rich in fats.
Obesity is a medical condition in which excess body fat has accumulated to the extent that it may have an adverse effect on health, leading to reduce life expectancy and/or increased health problems. Obesity has been a health problem ever since infectious disease had began in the first half of the 20th Century. The person with obesity is not the only person who is affected by their disease. In the case of childhood obesity, It can affect the parents because they might be the cause of the child’s issues. It can also lead to many different health problems such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and respiratory problems, and it can also even lead to death. Obesity has affected the world in many ways: task forces have been formed to address the issue, people are suffering from health problems due to obesity, and others suffer psychological and social issues.
ABSTRACT: It has often been observed that obesity follows a socioeconomic gradient which adversely affects the poor. This paper proposes the outline of a sociological theory of obesity as a consequence of ‘globalisation factors, such as labour market deregulation. Forced to work longer hours – and with lower levels of job-security – workers in low paid jobs have fewer opportunities to burn calories, and are more likely to consume fast-food. This combination has led to higher levels of obesity among the poor in countries that have adopted neo-liberal labour market reforms.
Obesity rates have skyrocketed within the last 10-20 years. This is in direct correlation with the diet and exercise habits of cultures. As cultures begin to incorporate different culture’s cuisines into their own cultures, the obesity rate starts to increase. This is most likely caused by their heritage history being accustomed to their culture’s cuisine history. Then diet and exercise come into play as well. We live in a time where technology has almost taken over our lives. In modern day, we can drive wherever we need to go, we do not have to walk everywhere anymore; we do not have to even go to the grocery store anymore because Amazon.com has now made their website into a grocery store in select parts of the country where we pick what we need online and it is delivered to our house. This program is set to go nationwide soon, and eventually globally. This is the epitome of laziness and why different cultures are becoming obese; especially America. Diet and exercise have almost become a thing of the past in America. Yes, there is still a large amount of humans that still exercise daily, but not the average American. The most active age group, worldwide, is 22-34 year olds with an average salary of $20,000 or less (Thompson 2013). Cultures such as the Native Americans, Mexicans, Chileans, and the culture that tops the list; Americans, are among the world’s most obese cultures (Downey 2011).

Obesity in America is directly due to the fast food industry. From the rising mortality’s among people who are obese from fast food. To even the preservatives fast food chains use within their food. Not only have that calorie’s people intake from these restaurants even been miss looked. While people may think they can overcome the urge, fast food chains exclusively use addictive’s in their products to hook people from day one of use. Society is now much lazier as a whole, resorting to a more convenience-based lifestyle including taking escalators instead of stairs and driving instead of walking. Obesity in the United States is on the rise and there is no end in sight. Obesity is a health problem that does not discriminate, it effects all ages, genders, and races. There are many factors that can cause an individual to become obese. These factors can include calorie intake, amount of physical activity, genetics, and environment. The rise of obesity in the United States has posed health and financial problems for this country that need to be dealt with.
First, looking at high calorie, high fat content, and hidden sugar meals, have you ever took into consideration how fast food meals are prepared or for that matter what is the difference in how you would cook your own meals at home. Fast food restaurants, their meals are high calorie dense foods with added ingredients we would not knowingly truly put into our bodies.
