No Respect for Servants in History and Present Day

Shakespeare throughout many of his famous stories glorified famous figures due to the fact they would take care of everything and everyone. In large households during the Elizabethan Era, masters would hire servants or nannies to perform duties that they could not finish due to the fact of not having time or being busy all the time with business. Servants did not receive the respect they deserved even though they took pride in their roles and responsibilities. After five hundred years, these ethics have carried their way into our world today. Servants and nannies of the Elizabethan Era had multiple roles, responsibilities, limitations, and privileges that are similar to the ones of modern day nannies and personal servants.
Elizabethan servants in large households had roles and responsibilities which were to be upheld. For example, a chamberlain was a popular, needed servant in large households. The master’s chief personal servant was known as the chamberlain and was responsible for all the household servants (Olsen). Chamberlains would ensure that all servants would keep up with their tasks. As well, the chamberlain would prepare the master’s bedroom such as making sure the master would have clean sheets. In addition, the page was a beloved servant by the master of the household. “Another personal servant was the page, a boy or young man in medieval times often the son of a relative or friends’ who accompanied the master and ran his errands” (592-597). This young man or boy was honorably dressed and was much more educated that most servants. Since he served in the master’s bedroom, he was quite powerful with vast authority throughout the household. Parents look for nannies and/or personal servants that are educated because kids will have to complete homework that they may need help with, but parents are exhausted after a long day of work. Working late, parents will not assist their children with homework which will not allowing parents to get sleep that is needed. Yet wages were low five hundred years ago, a year-round nanny or personal servant makes an outstanding amount of money. Surveys were conducted and found that nannies receive an average of sixteen dollars an hour and a high earning nanny can earn hundred thousand dollars a year or more a year depending on location, education, and references. Most year round nannies receive exceptional pay compared to many other jobs. Hundred thousand dollars annually is over the average salary.
