Muhammad feared for the safety of the Muslims and knew the time had come for them to leave Mecca. Muhammad encouraged “83 men and their families” to migrate “to Axum in Abyssinia, four hundred miles away across the Red Sea” (Stewart, 55). Around half of the Muslims permanently stayed in Axum while about half eventually returned to Mecca (Stewart, 55). Records indicate that the religion of Islam spread with help of the 83 converts from Mecca to “another continent” (Stewart, 55). Muhammad did not embark on the pilgrimage with the Muslims and remained in Mecca. The Koran begun long before Muhammad received his first message from Allah. The Koran houses the prophecies of the prophets who preceded Muhammad (Kadir, 12). “From the Quran, Muslims …show more content…
One of the most interesting is the Night Journey. The story of the Night Journey begins with Muhammad being awakened by the Angel Gabriel (Stewart, 61). Gabriel was not alone but in the company of a magnificent horse who had wings (Stewart, 61). Muhammad rode upon the horse to the “Temple of Jerusalem” (Stewart, 61). At the temple Muhammad was greeted by prophets who came before him “Abraham, Moses and Jesus” (Stewart, 61). Muhammad looked up to the sky and saw a ladder descending (Stewart, 61). Gabriel and Muhammad climbed up the ladder and into Heaven (Stewart, 61). In the First Heaven Muhammad witnessed Adam viewing “the torments of the damned” (Stewart, 61). This can be translated into the notion that Adam was looking into Hell. Muhammad was then taken to the Seventh Heaven where he was greeted by Abraham. Abraham showed Muhammad “Paradise” (Stewart, 61). The Night Journey is significant to Islam because it affirms the holiness of Jerusalem (Stewart, …show more content…

In the investigation of Islam, the five pillars of Islam provide a glimpse of the life and obligations of the Muslim. The main pillars include confession, prayer, fasting, almsgiving, and pilgrimage. This essay will provide a brief overview of the pillars, how prayer is lived out in an individual Muslims life, and how Christians assimilate to Muslim culture in Saudi Arabia.
It is believed that here God told Muhammed, through the angel Gabriel, that he was going to spread Islam and be the bearer of the divine message or basically be a prophet. Although, it is clear throughout Islamic religion that the only job of Muhammed was to strictly “read what God had ordered and ordained, nothing more” (Bassiouni, 10). Therefore, everything Muhammed said would apparently be with the help of God, making it that much more persuasive and significant. In Muhammed’s time everyone was pagan and believed in multiple gods that controlled different aspects of life. Muhammed’s hometown of Mecca’s economy revolved around the beliefs of multiple Gods, which attracted followers from other towns to come to Mecca and purchase these idols along with other objects that were related. Since Muhammed’s basic belief in a monotheistic religion without statues of gods was extremely different from the popular pagan one, the community felt threatened that he would destroy their entire economy. Muhammed continued to preach even with threats of the community, yet he did not have much success until he told his story of when the Angel Gabriel visited him from God. The visit from Gabriel was the turning point that lead to the spread of Islam. Muhammed was able to physically support his statement that he supposedly traveled with
According to the Islamic beliefs, the Quran was revealed to Prophet Muhammad by Allah through Angel Gabriel. This process took twenty-two years, from when Prophet Muhammad became a Prophet, just up until he died. The Quran is believed to be the only text by Allah that didn’t get corrupted over the years by the community. ------(cont. intro) Explain why this is important-----
Due to the restrictive nature of Mecca, Muhammad was unable to convert many. Those who did convert converted individually, not in groups, whilst their clans remained as their basic social links. For Islam to succeed Muhammad needed to migrate to a more convenient place, where he could form spiritual and political leadership, preach openly and convert Muslims in groups. Yathrib would provide this and Muhammad's migration would begin a new era. Muhammad’s unacceptance in Mecca and thus his decision to take the Hijrah to a place where Islam could bloom attaches meanings of determination and perseverance to the Hijrah. Islam was unappealing to the majority in Mecca and preaching it came at a huge cost, but the prophet did not give up and attempt to settle back into the restricting nature of pre-Islamic Mecca, he was determined that Islam was going to be a success and that his revelations would be heard.

In the Islamic faith there are five pillars that they must follow to their best ability. In addition to the many different ways the followers of Islam spread the religion and expanded their empire, the religion itself was appealing to many people outside of Arabia. The Islamic religion contained many beliefs and practices that were extremely appealing to others. One of these beliefs was that Islam is an uncompromising monotheistic religion, meaning there is only one God. In addition, there was an extremely well and highly developed set of legal codes and a strong sense of community among the followers of Islam. The five pillars were also extremely appealing because they provided the basis for religious unity. The humbleness and prayerfulness of the Islamic people was admirable to those of other faiths.

The beginning of Islam all started in Arabia around 570 C.E. when a prophet was born. This prophet was known as Muhammad, although it is said that he has multiple names, which was born in a city called Makkah, or Mecca. This man lived a normal life by getting married and having children. He would venture out into the desert every now and then to pray and fast. It was during one time in the desert within a cave that an archangel known as Gabriel approached him. It is at this time that Gabriel gave Muhammad the first verses of the revelation. This would continue on for years up until Muhammad’s death. All of the verses that he was provided would eventually end up into the sacred text known as the Qur’an, or Koran. During Muhammad’s time of receiving the messages from God, his tribe wanted him dead as they did not want to change their way of living. Before his own tribe killed him, he was invited to travel to a city known as Yathrib to be their ruler, which this city would later be called Madinah. Muhammad and his followers set out for this particular city around June 622, which marks the beginning of the Islamic calendar.
