My life quest is to gain mindfulness. Mindfulness means to be aware of what is around you and having control of your actions, and thoughts at the same time. In other terms: paying attention in a particular way. Being open to many options and comparing it to your own opinions. Also living in the moment with focus of your surroundings and your doing. All of these phrases help describe what mindfulness is. This 3 syllable word can also mean perseverance, charity, and living life to the fullest.
Perseverance is one of the most important qualities in life. Being able to push yourself through hard times ,and motivating your mind to keep on gaining knowledge. Ever since I was a little girl, I was encouraged to become a doctor. I didn’t know why, but i was just just encourage to. After my 12 th birthday, I found out that my mom had Colon Cancer. I had cried myself to sleep that night, wondering if she is going to make it or not. I have 6 siblings, 4 brothers, two sisters, not including me. Luckily it was just the first stage of cancer, she was able to have surgery and Chemotherapy done. During therapy the antibiotics that were given were strong. She had a rash on her arm, lost a great amount of hair, and was in pain the whole time. She fought through it ,because us kids were the reason why she wanted to live. After 3 years, chemotherapy was a success. Thanks to all of the doctors and nurses they have saved my mom’s life and answer the question I had since a little girl. I want to achieve the goal of becoming a doctor to make an impact on others’ life and give back to the community, by helping kids and adults achieve a long lasting life.

...ght my dad brought me home and he left to go watch over my mom in the hospital. I explain the situation to all of my sibling I remember my younger sister crying and my baby sister asking: “where is mom? Is mommy going to come home?”
Finally three weeks after she was feeling better, i still remember the doctor making a statement before I left the hospital. He said to me in front of my mom, “ You are one lucky daughter, your mom was suppose to be death, her spirit should have left her body, she was supposed to be dead ever since I brought her into the hospital. I don’t know ,but your mom is one strong lady.” I said I thank you, and left with mom. From that day on I spend everyday trying to be with my family, and working hard through school, giving back to the community to say thank you, living everyday like it is my last. Lastly is trying to be mindful.

Mindfulness therapeutic approach is defined as being able to pay attention in the present moment without passing judgment. Mindfulness is a mental state achieved by focusing one’s awareness on the present while calmly acknowledging and accepting one’s feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations, as a therapeutic technique. The M square, as I call it, which stands for Mindfulness and Meditation is making an impact on today’s society, as it has been used by more people with each passing day. They are starting to acknowledge the benefits, some of which are the improvement in both mental and physical health, acceptance of one’s self, lower stress and depression, and maybe more, but to mention a few. Not excluding these two great men: Dr. Martinez, a Biocognitive Psychologist, and Keith Mitchell, an ex-American football linebacker in the National Football League. Both Dr. Martinez and Keith are strong supporters and practitioners of meditation and mindfulness.
Counselors have a wide array of techniques they use to treat their clients. Not one form of counseling works for every individual seeking help. Over the past decades, mindfulness has piqued the interest of many counselors and researchers in the area of cognitive psychology. Its use in counseling has grown and is a part of many counseling processes. Mindfulness has helped to make new strides in the area of counseling and treating patients with a handful of different disorders and issues. Mindfulness is now a widely used practice, and research is still being conducted today to find new ways it can continue to benefit society.
My perseverance has prepared me for a career in medicine. The path towards becoming a physician can be long and challenging, necessitating the ability to endure. My ability to bounce back from setbacks and mistakes has solidified throughout my journey. One of the cornerstone experiences of my personal development occurred during high school. My determination led to me my graduating as valedictorian of my class, while balancing three varsity sports and several extracurricular activities. In addition, I worked on weekends to help support my family financially. This persistence resulted in scholarship awards that made higher education a possibility.
We were interrupted by a phone call from my dad. My mom was still joking and in a silly mood when she started talking to my dad. Suddenly the conversation turned from joking to dead silence and my mom started crying. She tearfully asked, "Is she ok? Was she alone?" I was thinking my sister went riding and fell off her horse or that something had happened to my grandma.
It was the last Saturday in December of 1997. My brother, sister, and I were chasing after each other throughout the house. As we were running, our parents told us to come and sit down in the living room. They had to tell us something. So, we all went down stairs wondering what was going on. Once we all got down stairs, the three of us got onto the couch. Then, my mom said, “ Well…”

I have also been fortunate enough to have made it this far on my road to medical school with the help of my pre-medical advisor, pre-medical programs (MMEP), and my mentor. I know that with their continued support, I will be able to successfully complete the curriculum needed to become a physician. I know, however, that the road to a medical degree will be hard and long, but I will never give up my dreams of becoming a physician. I am determined to help fight the war against those life threatening diseases like AIDS, and by becoming a physician, I can be on that special team that will make a difference in a patient's life.

As a senior college student, I am often under a lot of stress. This stress causes me to become anxious, nervous, and restless. It is difficult for me to focus on the present moment, because I am often worried about future events such as exams, projects, and graduate school. Since this stress directly interferes with my ability to focus, spend time with my friends and family, and do the things I love, I want to change this behavior. I am going to change this behavior by implementing mindfulness into my life. According to Kabat-Zinn (1993), mindfulness is “…awareness that emerges through paying attention on purpose, in the present moment, and nonjudgmentally to the unfolding of experience moment by moment” (Zimmaro et al., 2016). My father's eyes opened, and he called out for my sister Kelly and I to come to him. In a very serious and sad voice, he told us that he was very sick, and he was going to the Fort Wayne hospital. My mother told Kelly and I to help her pack some things for him, because he was going to be leaving soon. We helped her pack, keeping quiet because we did not want to interrupt the silence that had taken over the room.
