Jehovah’s Witness Kingdom Hall
For my field experience activity I choose to go and visit the Jehovah’s Witness Kingdom Hall in Cumming, Georgia. I choose this particular location because not only did it represent a religious sector that I was very uninformed of, but this specific building is one that has been there for almost 15 years now and I would say I have driven by it without paying it any mind just about 5-6 times a week for several years. The Kingdom Hall is made entirely out of red brick. The Kingdom Hall building is a simple setup. They have a general meeting area with about 150 seats inside and a podium for speaking purposes. They have a couple of additional rooms for storage purposes and multipurpose areas like a kitchen and other open areas for different things.
A friend of mine had conducted a similar field experience activity and introduced me to Gary and Dina Roy, attenders of the Kingdom Hall in Cumming. Upon arriving I had no idea what to expect. I met a few Jehovah’s Witnesses in middle school but never spent enough time with them to make conclusions about their religion and their culture. All that I really knew was that they were not able to celebrate school holidays, but I never knew why. My father told me they didn’t believe in Jesus and that they were a cult. I had a sense that my father was incorrect about their faith so I went into my field experience with an open mind hopeful that I would become more informed on a sect of my own religion, Christianity. My friend told me that keeping an open mind was key and that I was soon to embark on a journey full of new perspectives.
My first visit was a simple observation visit. I met with Gary and Dina at the Kingdom Hall for the 1pm Bible Talk service and the Wa...

The environment as a whole was the most welcoming and accepting environment that I had ever been a part of. Through it all I met only friendly people and was never uncomfortable. Each person remembered my name and made an effort to get to know me, a feeling that make everyone feel warm inside. Since, I have started to wonder just how many other groups I have jumped to hasty conclusions about without seeing it for myself. Since my time with the Roy’s, my goal has been to reassess my previous assumptions and to diversify my experiences to become more informed about the things that I know little about. I have learned that you should not always believe what you are told, but rather to go out and see it for yourself. Keeping an open mind will mostly likely change your life forever.
This experience was really out of my comfort zone. It was hard to be an outsider and not prepared for what was to come and not speaking one of the languages used to understand the entire service. This service learning project gave me the opportunity to try a new church and gain a deeper respect for a different religion. Everyone at the service was very educated on speaking the sacred texts and participating in the rituals practiced. I hope to have gained a better understanding for those who are new to religions and are nervous to come to a worship service. I will make more of an effort to be welcoming and accommodating to those who are new to our church.
Venturing inside, we all noticed two things very quickly: we were at once wearing entirely too much clothing to be comfortable in the sweltering heat, and entirely too little to fit in with the rest of the congregants assembled. And yet we were welcomed with open arms. We had arrived, the Reverend Rogers L. Pruitt emphasized as we filed into the sanctuary, on a very special day. As he distributed bulletins and hearty handshakes to the rest of the group, I noticed that the front of mine read "Fragment Day." As I looked around the modest sanctuary, I wondered what the service had in store for us.
How long will it take America’s streets to be clean? “In January 2014, there were 578,424 people experiencing homelessness on any given night in the United States” (Snapshot of Homelessness, n.d.). The number of homeless found on the streets continues to increase and more and more are left without food and shelter. They are left to survive off whatever resources they can find, and most nights it is nothing. This epidemic is beginning to grow out of proportion and action must be made to help change the brokenness found on the streets. Covina is one of many cities that has a numerous amount of homeless. The Calvary Chapel Cornerstone Church should implement a program that reaches out to help the homeless find jobs within the community due to
Through this short presentation, we will try to identify the true nature of Jehovah’s Witnesses. And, as there is limitation on time we will not go too deep in details but we will try to learn them better so that we may be ready to face them next time.
The Temple of Freedom Under God, Church of God, is one of the oldest religious organizations located in the District of Colombia, whose congregation is currently being led under the supervision of Elder Walter D. Roman, Sr. Like many of the Pentecostal churches in this day and age, the Temple of Freedom Under God’s practices and beliefs coincide with the traditional practices of the earlier Pentecostal African American churches, holding tightly onto the doctrines that were instilled in The Gospel Spreading Church during the 1900s.
What is religion? Religion is defined as a system of symbols, myths, doctrines, ethics, and rituals for the expression of ultimate relevance. There are several different types of religions an individual can follow. Often a religion is introduced to a person early in childhood. I attended the 9:20 a.m. Sunday morning worship service at Bellevue Baptist Church, 2000 Appling Road, Cordova, Tennessee.
Their interpretation of the bible as well as their practices have clearly divided them from mainstream Christianity, even though they believe they have the true Christian religion. Whether the Jehovah’s Witnesses are legit in the eyes of other Christians may be questionable, with 239 Lands where Jehovah’s Witnesses worship, 8,201,545 Jehovah’s Witnesses worldwide, 9,499,933 Free home Bible courses conducted, 19,950,019 Attendance at the annual Memorial of Christ’s death, and 115,416 Congregations, their reach is not.
...varied greatly. In addition, they were exceedingly sympathetic not only towards me and my fellow State University student but to the world in general. They prayed for the well being of not themselves or their community alone they prayed for peace in the world. I agree with much of what was said in the service even though I do not share their faith. Nonetheless, I find their values and their love for God admirable. I did not feel like a stranger amongst them I felt like I was making friends with people I would have probably never dare to approach before. That is the most valuable I obtained; to have an open mind and an open heart to others because regardless of how different we may be, there is always something precious we can learn from each other.
Through my own experience, I was proven wrong. They showed me how wrong I was and I am grateful to them for that. I’m grateful for the love and kindness and culture they introduced to me. I’m glad they made me think for myself and carry my own opinion. I arrived with a predetermined expectation that was set so negatively by someone I could hardly care for. I left with a heavy heart as I held back tears when saying goodbye. An entire group of people that didn’t know me and didn’t have to treat me in any special left me feeling hopeful of everything else I had been taught to
I arrived at the Bethany Center quite early in the morning. I remember feeling incredibly excited about the day ahead but also slightly anxious, because I had no idea what to expect from the day. However, all of my nervousness faded away once we got off the buses and stood in a huge circle together with the senior leaders in between us. They led us in a variety of fun activities, including songs and ice breakers that immediately brightened our spirits, and created enthusiasm for the rest of the day’s activities. Then, we broke up into small groups. My retreat leader was Caroline Lamoutte, and her friendly demeanor and bubbly personality brought everyone out of their shells and encouraged us to ask questions we had been too embarrassed to ask
In the Covenant House, The general principle of Fidelity and Responsibility means that the agency will depend on their staff to lead in the proper way of showing others how to work together. The ethical general principle of Fidelity and Responsibility is not met because of the way the staff conducts themselves
As my friend Jenni and I entered the hall of the big church, a feeling of apprehension overwhelmed us. Our feelings were soon comforted when we entered a sea of smiling faces and outstretched hands. A sense of belonging engulfed us. Ms. Shirley, an older colored woman was first to extend her arms. She did not know us from Adam, but it did not matter. She threw her arms around us. "You girls have the prettiest smiles", she declared. "I am so glad you came to be with us this morning." Words can not describe what the act of kindness did to our feelings of apprehension, and that was just the beginning.
I will continue to learn about my faith and other religions and learn about what others do with their faith. I will continue to be respectful of others’ faiths and to always be a good upstanding Christian.
It may seem a little bit strange, but my favorite place in town in none other than this beautiful Evangelic Church. However, it wasn’t always so.
The method of evangelism that I used for my witness report was the “Four Spiritual Laws.” I chose this method because it is simple straight to the point, and has facts that I believe cannot be disputed. It is also quick and simple to explain. How I started the conversation was simple actually, for a while one of my family members has been confused about if there is a god or not and the last time I came home we spoke about what I have learned down at Liberty. Thus I thought it would be a good idea to bring up what I learned during these past few weeks from this class. of course what I have learned from this class are different ways to evangelize and that is how the conversation started.
