It can bring people to their feet before a sports game, it can bring tears to people’s eyes during a movie, and it can be the medium used to tell someone you love them for the first time. Basically, music can be used for everything, but why is it not used extensively in medicine? What if I told you that music could be used to help your uncle that is undergoing chemotherapy, or your grandma that is suffering from dementia? That just by playing some soft blues in the room, your brother will recover more quickly and painlessly from his car accident. Hospitals normally do not play music in their rooms because some people think it to be distracting or even distasteful. Skeptics believe that music should stay in clubs and away from hospitals, but what they fail to notice is that the clubs are a place where people go to lift their spirits. Enjoying life should not stop at the clubs, but instead continue on through the halls of a hospital. There have even been studies to further confirm my argument, such as the study of musical therapy on cancer patients.

It might be from playing basketball yesterday or just finishing a run on the greenway, but what if the fatigue you are experiencing cannot be explained? This would be identified as idiopathic chronic fatigue, which is medically unexplained chronic fatigue. As of now, there are no definitive cures for ICF which is where music therapy comes in. The experimenters that conducted the tests for the article, “The Effect of Oriental Medicine Music Therapy On Idiopathic Chronic Fatigue”, state that “the decrease in significant FSS scores in the OMMT group indicated that OMMT relieved overall fatigue of participants”. In other words, they found that FSS (Fatigue Severity Scale) scores had decreased with the use of OMMT (Oriental Medicine Music Therapy). This is important because “4-30%” of the world experience idiopathic chronic fatigue (Lee, et al.). Because of idiopathic chronic fatigue being such a global issue, something must be done to help the people suffering from it. Music is the key to unlock that door, and all people should be able to use that door, even those categorized as special.
