Mother Teresa was a “saint” in Calcutta. Mother Teresa, who’s native name was Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu, wasn’t always the person who helped others. She lived a different lifestyle before she became such a saint. Keep in mind, Calcutta was not particularly the best place to live at the time of Mother Teresa. After her nun experience, Teresa began the stages of “motherhood.” This was the time where her teaching career really took off. After teaching, Teresa realized her moment to shine was helping others. She then began the Missionaries of Charity. There was never just one charity, no. Mother Teresa began a few because she felt not only one was enough. Other than the Missionaries of Charity, Teresa had been involved in a few other non-religious activities. For her kindness and helpfulness, Teresa was awarded many prizes for what she did for others. She didn’t only help children, she also was very assistive to elders. Mother Teresa suffered some illness for quite some time before her passing. When she finally did, people praised her and Teresa received the title of a legend from many, including the Pope. Mother Teresa’s tireless efforts won her great fame and she received her image from the concern for the world’s most helpless people.

From there, she led the Sisters of Charity in ministering to the sick and hungry by giving them much needed food and live. She was born in Albania in a town named Uskup. During that time the town was under the Ottoman Empire rule. It was not until after many years later that the name was changed and government ruling also. The new name of the town was Skopje and governs under the Republic of Macedonia. The name that was given to her at birth was Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu (“Mother Teresa-Facts”).
When others didn't accept, receive, or help those in need, Saint Teresa did. I admire her greatly for her acts of selflessness, humility, and charity. Additionally, what I find most interesting about Saint Teresa's life is how Jesus called her to serve on September 10, 1946, during a train ride for her annual retreat. On that day, Jesus revealed His pain at the human neglect of the poor, His sorrow at their ignorance of Him, and His yearning desire for their love. Jesus himself asked Saint Teresa to establish a religious community dedicated to the service of the poor.

They were greatly involved in the local church, especially her mother, who was a compassionate and pious women. Tragically, however, when Mother Teresa was only 8 years old, her father became suddenly ill and died. Although the cause of his death remains unseen, it has been speculated that political antagonists poisoned him. After her father’s death, she grew remarkably close to her mother, who impressed upon her with a deep obligation to charity (Mother Teresa). Moreover, in 1912 at the age of twelve, Mother Teresa felt a strong call from God. Knowing she had to be a missionary to spread the love of Christ, she left her parental home at eighteen.
But a biography is one place where we would expect to find a perfectly impartial story. We want to know the good and the bad side of a person. Malcolm Muggeridge, however, mostly conveys the good side of Mother Teresa. He holds her in such high opinion that he convinces everyone that she is saintly. To be a good biography though, it must encompass all sides of a character, including the flaws. In Something Beautiful for God, Malcolm claims that, “There are few things I should rather do than please her” (Muggeridge, 54), and that he would even enter the church if “…it would give happiness to Mother Teresa” (Muggeridge, 58). To Malcolm, Mother Teresa was perfect. And he conveys that in the book. If the reader were to only read this book on Mother Teresa, they would never know her true beliefs and principles. They would not know that she believed that Mary was the mediator between God and ourselves. They would not know that she believed that all religions will lead to the same God. They would not know that she believed that suffering is spiritual value and that she would not prescribe pain killers telling her patients that they are suffering like Christ. Overall, this book would not tell you who Mother Teresa really was. It’s true that Mother Teresa brought light to parts of the world that no one would dare go, but it’s also true that Mother Teresa taught a false religion.
