The most important event in my life has been attending MASC’s summer leadership camp in 2012 and 2013. Those ten days were perhaps the most beneficial days of my life.
MASC stands for Missouri Association of Student Councils. Since I joined our school’s Student Council my senior year, I had the opportunity to attend their summer camp.
When I arrived, as a Level 1 camper, I was overwhelmed by all the other crazy and outgoing campers. I didn’t know how I was going to fit in since I was shy around new people. Everyone was split into 26 different councils. I was in council ‘M’. That week changed me from a shy, new Student Council member to a girl who was completely comfortable with being herself and confident for her first year in Student Council
The first major event was the Olympics. All 26 councils came together and participated in different games. This was when our council first truly bonded and brought me out of my comfort zone. San Joaquin Memorial has had a significant impact on my leadership and service experiences in my life. During my time at SJM, I have gotten the chance to take part in leading sports teams. I was the captain of my JV basketball and volleyball teams my freshman year and I helped lead us to a successful season filled with hard work and integrity. Through my time as captain for my teams, I learned that being a leader requires a great amount of service to those who you're leading. Personally, my role as captain has been very meaningful in my leadership experiences at SJM. I learned to take initiative and encourage those who I am leading even when when situations get tough. The best leadership accomplishment that demonstrates my potential to make significant contributions to the campus community and broader society is cheerleading. Cheerleading has made a huge impact on my life and has created many opportunities for me. It has paved the way for my high school career. Cheerleading provided me with opportunities to lead, volunteer, perform and show the athletic ability of our squad.
The second year of the competition, I was only one of two returning students. I took an active role in recruiting new students, and our membership doubled. It was a complete role reversal for me because all of a sudden I was the experienced team member. We finished fifth out of forty teams at the regional competition, and at the national tournament, we placed in the top third.
These events have lead me to become more confident when speaking. With this ability, I have become better able to pursue my dreams. For example, after the first year I participated in the leadership development competition, I decided to run for a position as an FFA officer. I now hold the vice president position for the Rockwall FFA chapter. While I participated in these events last year, our chapter won district sweepstakes and I have been further motivated to continue my involvement in FFA.

“Being in such an intense sport, surrounded by people in the same boat as me, has really brought me closer to my team. We get to know each other’s strengths and weaknesses.” They push her to become the best gymnast she can be; she describes her team as a family. They cheer each other on and are the biggest support system to make her better. Being around the same group of people nearly every day through their struggles and successes has really brought the athletes of the Classic closer together.
It seems unbelievable my oldest is a few days off being a decade old. I know every parent wonders “where has the time gone?” a multitude of times during their children’s childhoods, but as I realize my son is over halfway to 'adulthood' it seems like the time has flown by.
Many pivotal moments appear in a human beings life to change the way that individual thinks. All human experiences shape the way a person becomes. The death of my 20 year old second cousin changed my perspective on life. It was not because he was close to me or had a huge impact on my life, but because such a young life ended so suddenly. I got to experience how that impacted and even changed certain people. I came to the realization that all those stories on the news actually happen to real life people. These stories seem so unimaginable, but from that point on, I realized that anything can happen to anyone in the simple blink of an eye. During the three months living and working in America at an inner city, underprivileged, disabled and able bodied summer camp I learnt how to deal with stressful situations in unfamiliar surroundings, and I believe I equipped myself excellently in these situations through my own self evaluation and the feedback I received from the camp director. Because of my abilities I was chosen to become a head counsellor for an encampment. This entailed leading and planning all activities for the other 12 staff and the 36 children that were under my guidance. Any problems which should have arisen I would use the leadership skills I have learnt from coaching to help me get to a solution. Being at a camp like this has helped heighten my awareness of not only physical disabilities; but also the emotional turmoil that people occur, and how to deal with certain situations in different ways. Because of the close quarters in which I lived and worked, communication was a key aspect to make sure everything ran smoothly. I also had to be considerate of everyone as not one person was the same, from race to religion to swimming ability to reading ability, and I believe this has helped me become a well-rounded individual with compassion and understanding of all people and
But I think the most important thing what we could find the group factor in this activity is the same goal. We had a very exact and definite goal that was competing with other groups and winning in that competition. Thus, perhaps not only me but also other group members felt the sense of camaraderie through competition with other teams. If we had no such goal, our conversation would continue and we could play our role with responsibility? Like a Superhero group
Everyone has a story, a pivotal moment in their life that started to mold them into the person they are today and may even continue to mold you to the person that you will become, I just had mine a little bit earlier than others. When I was three years old my brother became a burn survivor. It may seem too early for me to remember, but I could never forget that day. Since then, I have grown, matured and realized that what my family and I went through has been something of a benefit to be and an experience that has helped me in deciding what I want to do with the rest of my life.

Throughout life we come across many people, some who influence us in negative ways, and those who influence in good ways, often changing our complete outlook on life. For me, it took the struggle of one of my best friends to open my eyes. I only wish it wasn't too late to thank her.
