Community Service is a service that is performed for the benefit of the public or its institutions. There are two groups who perform community service, and those are criminals and the rest of us. This means that, for the majority of us, performing community service is completely voluntary. It is for this reasons li that I believe that community service should not be mandatory in high school for graduation. The supporters of this act think of it as an ideal society’s noble concept, but it is rather a noble concept trying to force an ideal society. When you look at it from this perspective you realize it is ironic. Furthermore, you must take into consideration that teenagers don’t like being told they have to do something, and when they are they tend to do it less than halfheartedly. For example, there are teenagers who enjoy gardening, teenagers who enjoy running, and teenagers who enjoy playing piano. When you force all teenagers to do this job you will find many who do not enjoy these activities and do them with little effort if they do it at all. For instance, consider this: When teacher gives work and tells you to do it; there are many who simply don’t. However, when teacher offers make-up works there are many who chose to do it. Secondly, as grim a fact as it is, we need to consider that students are already struggling as it is on average. Outside the education realm, students might have to deal with issues such as social status, self-esteem, up-and-down relationships with friends or significant others, or even worse parents, which could lead to a whole other batch of problems alone. Of course, assuming none of these problems arise, we find that they most of all struggle with their education. According to a speech given by President Obama, 1.2 million students drop out of high school every year. If you add more requirements for graduation can we really expect any better? Let’s certainly not forget that many schools probably shouldn’t have more on their plate either. Around 2,000 high schools make up 60% of these drop outs. That means 12% of all American high schools have a high concentration of problems, and if they can’t do their basic function of teaching them how can we expect them to handle mandatory community service? Finally, some teenagers just need to work. Each year around 750,000 high school female students become pregnant, and as we all know babies add enormous stress to your pocket book.

Some people are given chances to do community service when they need to pay off fines for tickets. Most people simply do because they love getting involved. It’s their way of making the community a cleaner, healthier place.
As everyone knows, teen pregnancy rate is increasing more and more each day and someone needs to do something to try and either stop it or decrease it dramatically. Teen pregnancy is causing dramatic population increase and that’s just common sense. Teens getting pregnant at such a young age is also causing poverty levels to go up more and more. Mississippi Spent over $100 million on teen pregnancy alone in the year 2010 (“Teen Pregnancy”). Just think of what it is now. More teens are dropping out of school and not finishing their education. According to the authors of this article, “approximately 30 percent of teen mothers have mothers who dropped out of high school, 40 percent have mothers who are mothers who dropped out of high school, 40 percent have mothers who are high school graduates, and 30 percent have mothers who attended college”(Kearny et al 143). Many people don’t realize that there are many effects of teen pregnancy including higher risk of birth defect, more likely to drop out, and also abortion rates increase.
With this issue the teens tend to earn less money than those who have graduated and have went to college. This causes the children of the teen parent’s to struggle to keep up with their school peers. Teen pregnancy is affecting the graduation rate in high schools. “Approximately 1,000 high school students will drop out with each hour that passes in a school day in America” (National Women’s Law Center, 2007). Teen pregnancy first came into view in the 1950’s. In different states teens that were pregnant were not allowed to attend school, most of them had to switch schools out of state in order to attend. Teenage pregnancy was normal in previous centuries and common in developed countries in the twentieth century. As higher education became available to women, they began to start their families later in life. By the 1950’s, parents were encouraging their kids to stay in school and to not marry until they graduate high school so they can focus on school better. Most people in their late teenage years and early twenties, with the drive to be successful, are or should be in college. Instead, a large number of young women today are putting their life on the back burner because they are pregnant. With the recession going on in the United States, supporting and raising a baby while taking care of one’s self has become very strenuous. As teenagers, it’s almost impossible for them to imagine how much money and effort is required to have a baby. The people who decide to become parents at such young ages struggle to provide all that is necessary for themselves and their child. This makes it imperative for them to take advantage of the welfare system and all that it provides. As stated by the Baby Cost Calculator the first year after the child is born will cost $10,158 to provide for the baby’s necessities (Baby Center). That amount of money could easily cover two years of schooling at a small community college, or even a year at a university. Josefina J. Card states that “teen mothers are less likely to complete high school than their classmates, they are also more likely to end up on welfare” (Annual Review of Public Health). Community service is a common service for people to take care of each other and volunteer. People apply to different community services: soup kitchen, taking care of children and homeless people, clinics, churches, schools, neighbor's house and many countless places to volunteer. Some people really enjoy to work at community services while others do not. These community services can be a punishment for criminals because a court assigns them to do so. However, some people do not agree with community service supporters. While some people believe that there should be a community service requirement for high school and college graduation because students need to learn and have experiences there, they are right; on the other hand, a community service requirement should be allowed for two reasons and not be allowed for another three reasons.

Community service is not a responsibility or an obligation; it is a commitment. A person must want to do it with good intentions and not because they are being forced to do so. In an article written by Linda Saslow titled High School Mandating Community Service for Graduation, she mentions the many pros to mandatory community service. Saslow mentions school districts like Roslyn and Hewlett-Woodmere (1994, para 3) that have started requiring high school students to complete a certain number of community service hours in order to graduate high school. Their goal is to give “kids the opportunity for new experiences” (Saslow, 1994, para 4). Through research conducted by the school districts, they have come to the conclusion that students who would’ve been “too shy to volunteer have admitted that they were glad they had been forced”. Mandating community service for high school graduation was the best idea anyone could ever invent. Its a very useful, promising, and beneficial experience that every teen should want to be a part of. Volunteering gives people a sense of fulfilment, and the joy of knowing that so many people need help and being able to be that person to render those services make a better person. Community service should not be a burden for any teenager, but a special gift being giving to the community by a special individual. Community service should be a mandatory high school graduation requirement because it builds ones character, limits the rate of teenage delinquency, and establishes a path for a better future as an individual.
