Leaving civilization behind and moving to a cabin in the woods would be a challenge for man in today’s society. People today often live complex lives with massive focus on material goods. This is the opposite of living a transcendentalist lifestyle. Transcendentalists believe thought and spiritual things are more real than ordinary human experience and material things. A few of the many ideas Transcendentalism follows are; God as nature, less government and the search for meaning.
Reverence of nature is one of the main characteristics of Transcendentalism. When Emerson is talking about his Transcendentalist thoughts, he writes, “Philosophically considered, the universe is composed of Nature and the Soul” (Nature 1). Emerson, along with other transcendentalism followers, believe that nature is equal to God, as in both always surround man. Nature is a part of the individual; likewise, the individual is a part of nature. Beliefs are what define humans not as a society, but as individuals. Individualism is a large part of Transcendentalism, which was a movement started in the mid-nineteenth century led by figures such as Henry David Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson. Into the Wild, written in 1997 by Jon Krakauer, is a modern novel that examines a transcendentalist young adult. That young man is Chris McCandless, who leaves his family at the age of 23 to live the Transcendentalist dream. He hitchhikes and travels through many rivers and cities to get to Alaska, the place where he believes he can finally experience that dream. Transcendentalism is the idea that humans are innately one with nature, and therefore God, and that nature is the only place where humans belong because society is poisonous. By enjoying himself and connecting with god through the environment in an isolated location, Chris McCandless demonstrates that he is a faithful Transcendentalist.
The essay "Nature" by Ralph Waldo Emerson implements the use of many transcendentalist ideas through the use of strong rhetorical language. The core belief of transcendentalism is self-reliance and independence, and it stresses the importance that people need to do things on their own. Emerson uses irony to point out many latent truths about the concept. He also uses personification to show that the world around someone can have qualities of a human. Metaphors are also used heavily in the essay as catalysts to help the reader better understand Transcendentalism.

In Thoreau’s excerpt of “Walden”, he tested the transcendentalist philosophy through experience. Emerson’s transcendental writing style is displayed in “Nature”. In Melville’s excerpt of Moby Dick, he exhibits anti-transcendentalism in his work.

Overall, these connections and relationships are important because they are what Transcendentalism depends on. Without the support of these beliefs, Emerson would not be able to successfully write about his concepts on individual truths because of the lack of support. I was really confused by the thoughts of Emerson and the real meaning behind transcendentalism because of its complex beliefs. I felt that because of the belief of transcendentalism is so complex, it somewhat sounds vague. But, I do agree with Emerson and his ideas of how everyone takes everything around them for granted, not the material world, but of nature itself. I agree because in today's society there are many environmental issues that are harming nature itself and most of the issues are mainly caused by humans which I do agree still happen today as Emerson sees it, but his description of taking nature for granted was that people only focused on the objects in front of
Many people have theories and philosophies about life in general. There have been hundreds of thousands of books published by many different people on the ideas of people in the past and the present. Transcendentalism falls in amongst all of these ideas. There have been articles, essays, poems, and even books written about this subject. Transcendentalism has effected many people since the philosophy was first introduced. The idea was complex and hard to grasp for many commoners and therefore it was understood by few people, and some would think that the idea was not understood at all and that was part of the idea. Henry David Thoreau once stated about himself, “I should have told them at once that I was a transcendentalist. That would have been the shortest way of telling them that they would not understand my explanations” (Reuben 1).
In the unit “The Spirit of Individualism” there are two parts, “Celebrations of the self” and “The Dark side of Individualism” with pieces that present very different perspectives on human nature. “The Dark side of Individualism” portrays human nature as greedy, confused, easily caught up in fame, and addicted to wealth and possessions. In “Celebrations of the Self”, human nature is viewed in a more positive light. The characteristics shown are self reliance, independence, wisdom and selflessness. “The Dark side of Individualism” pieces are written in a more macabre tone, whereas “Celebrations of the Self” pieces have a more positive and uplifting tone to them. The generalizations of human nature are different because of the pieces in “The Dark side of Individualism” and “Celebrations of the Self” have entirely different views on life and human nature.

Transcendentalist were hard to define, but perhaps one of the fathers of transcendentalism Ralph Waldo Emerson defines it most gracefully in a speech he gave, “The Transcendentalist adopts the whole connection of spiritual doctrine, He believes in miracle, in the perpetual openness of the human mind to new influx of light and power: he believes in inspiration, and in ecstasy”. One characteristic of transcendentalism is self-reliance, or individualism. The key concept of this characteristic is that you should only be yourself and do things for yourself as well. John Lennon once said, “It is weird to not be weird.” He said this meaning that everyone is weird in their own way, and if you’re not yourself then that is what’s truly weird. A musical group called Chiddy Bang says, “There is no one like me,” in their song “Mind your Manners”. This is a very strong example of individualism meaning that you are the only you, no one can change that. In the Bon Jovi song “My Life” he talks about how it is his life and he has to live it and do things for himself. Terry Brooks once said, “Who would you be but you?” He is saying, why would you be someone that isn’t who you really are? Jon Krakauer tells the story of Christopher McCandless, who in June of 1990, set out on an adventure around the continent. After traveling all over and living on his own for two years, Chris decides to hitchhike up north to live off the Alaskan coast, 4 months later, Christopher was found dead. Though Chris’s adventure was fatal, his beliefs and actions throughout the book were undoubtable those of a transcendentalist.
Nature is the means for God and humanity to be reunited wholly. Emerson's enlightenment in the woods and his appreciation of natural beauty is quite profound. By becoming reconnected to the innocence, beauty and purity of nature Emerson had a revelation. He found himself closer to God. Perhaps Emerson is attempting to persuade us into fostering a greater respect for the natural world? He seems to be displeased with the "culturization" of wilderness.
