In lecture this week, I have learned about ‘Leadership and Followership’. Before this chapter, I thought that leadership and management were similar; however, after the lecture, I understood that leadership and management were two distinct aspects. I have learned that leadership means the art of motivating a group of people towards to achieve a target. In comparison, management means the process of planning, organizing, leading, controlling human and resources efficiently to achieve a target.

The main argument throughout the topic was ‘What makes a good leader?’ It has been argued that leaders are born with natural assets. On the other hand, people argued that leader can be trained. Personally, I think leaders are born with natural assets; however, leaders can also be trained by adopting the key characteristics of a good leader. On the trait theories, it has identified characteristics of a good leader, including self-confidenc...
Personality Traits and Leadership Styles of Great Leaders Great “leaders are made, not born” (Skrhak, 2014). A great leader motivates and influences a team to reach seemingly impossible goals. A great leader has a compelling sense of purpose and duty. Great leaders portray excellence and in return they expect no less than excellence. An effective and great leader is not defined by only personality, but by their values, ability and skills, and leadership style. Leaders posses a variety of personality
Personality Traits and Leadership Styles of Great Leaders Leadership Styles of Great Leaders: Peter Drucker said, “Leadership is lifting a person’s vision to high sights, the raising of a person’s performance to a higher standard, the building of a personality beyond its normal limitation” (Kruse, 2012). Leadership Identity Research indicates that leadership styles have a huge impact on how the world is being shaped every day. To demonstrate a clear correlation between leaders and decisions making process, Lilienfeld, Waldman, Watts, Landfield, Rubenzer, & Faschingbauer, (2012), Van, Cilliers, & van Deventer (2008), and Odom, Boyd, & Williams, (2012) developed a sample category of leadership identities based on three different concepts. Beaver et al. (2014) illustrated a high level of leadership
Leadership is one of the most sought after skills in the professional world and a fantastic skill to possess outside the workplace. However, while many people can give the dictionary definition of leadership not many understand what it truly means to be a leader. As Teddy Roosevelt said, “People ask the difference between a leader and a boss…The leader works in the open, and the boss in covert. The leader leads, and the boss drives.” This quote captures the essence of what leadership truly is; leading

In 2007 when then Senator Barack Obama announced his run for the presidency of the United States, the country was experiencing great turmoil and people were ready for a change in leadership. No matter what political party you held, it appeared to be an overwhelming sentiment that people were looking for a shift in direction, especially relating to the bad economical positions a lot of Americans had found themselves in. All of the challenges that the country was experiencing was a sign that the next
resource management (HRM), according to Wyk, V (1989:9), is the creation of an environment where people strive to do their best, where opportunities are equally distributed, where initiatives are encouraged and the conditions for success are created. Leadership within HRM can have huge implications to public services, the quality of those particular services provided is part of the bedrock on which society and future prosperity depends. Better and more efficient public services enhance quality of life
While it may be argued that leadership and followership are merely two sides of the same coin, just as with a coin, there are still differences between the two which can be observed. As any great leader was, at some point in their life, a follower, many of the followership traits can be seen in a leader as well. It stands to reason that a follower has a leader they are following, but it is not as simple as train cars following behind the engine. Followership is an active role which, when successful
In chapter one, the concept and definition of leadership was introduced and according to the text, more than one hundred definitions of leadership have been identified by scholars and academic studies. What is clear is that leadership requires certain skills and traits of an individual that give them the ability to influence others in a way that motivates them to work toward and accomplish a common objective and goal effectively. While most traits seem to be somewhat inborn and natural to most
Leadership Marquis describes a leader as the motivation and the leading of the performance. Leader’s uniqueness and abilities are what make others to need to take after his or her way (2009 p.32). First, a leader must understand the self and others as the beginning in leading. As Kouzes and Posner stated “self-discovery and self-awareness are critical to developing the capacity to lead. And personal reflection and analysis of one’s own leadership behaviors are core components in that process” (2011
Seemingly, there is much confusion surrounding the use of the concept leadership, especially when defining how the different types of leadership have influenced HRM. Preedy (1993:143) views leadership as the initiation of new structures or procedures for accomplishing an organization’s goals and objectives. If maintenance of goals and objectives is more important here, then this aspect can be favorably compared to the definition of management provided by Westhuizen, V. (1991:39). He defines management
Leadership is defined by Armstrong (2012) as a process of inspiring people to do their best in order to achieve the desired result, this involves developing and communicating a vision for the future, motivating people and securing their engagement. So, the efficiency in resources mobilization, allocation, utilization and enhancement of organizational performance depends to a large extent on leadership styles, among other factors (Obiwuru et al., 2011). A leadership style refers to a specific manners
Leadership is defined as a process by which an individual influences others to obtain goals. There are three aspects that should be addressed when explaining leadership. One aspect is that leadership is a social influence process; leadership could not exist without a leader and one or more followers. Another leadership aspect is compliance; all of the leader’s directions must be complied with voluntarily. Compliance is what separates leadership from other influence-based formal authority. Finally
Leadership theories and women Bass, 1990, explains that the word ‘‘leadership’’ was initially used to explain political influence and control of the British Parliament in the 1800s. He further elaborates that leadership was based on heritage and appointment and used to take place often in Anglo-Saxon countries (Bass, 1990, p. 11). Katz and Kahn, 1966, p.334 expands that leadership is to acknowledge the skill to influence others on organisational relevance. Michener et al. (1990) described leadership
Lussier and Achua (2004) define the leadership styles as a combination of traits, skills, and behaviours leaders use as they interact with employees. In order for one to understand and decide on a certain leadership styles, one must know the characteristics of the favourable leadership style. Over the years researchers have been debating on the topic of leadership, as conducting different studies the styles have different output. Nevertheless, the research done on this topic is indicating that specific
