The preparing for Christmas is called Advent and begins on a Sunday four weeks before Christmas till after New Year’s. One thing that remains the same, though, through all of these stages, is that eventually, we die; we are completely aware of that as humans. You know the story about everyone’s favorite reindeer: a funny looking reindeer gets made fun of by all of the other reindeer for his glowing nose, in which leads to his significant job of guiding the magical sleigh through the dark to deliver gift to all of the children. Christmas is a holiday filled with tradition, family, and happiness, but what most people don’t know is that Christmas is celebrated all over the world, not just the United States. Latin American countries are especially passionate about Christmas. The way Hispanic people celebrate changes throughout each country. Each one has its own unique Christmas culture. In this essay I am going to write about some of these different countries, and tell how each one is similar and different in showing their Christmas spirit.
In "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens, Ebenezer Scrooge undergoes a transformation as a result of his encounters with three ghosts and becomes a kind, happy, and generous man. His greedy, cruel, and grumpy demeanor is replaced seemingly overnight, but he doesn’t just wake up and decide to be nice. It takes three Spirits to change his outlook on life - The Ghosts of Christmases Past, Present, and Future. The Ghost of Christmas Past makes Scrooge begin to regret his selfishness, and the Ghost of Christmas Present begins to teach him about others. This second Ghost helps to make him realize that money doesn't buy happiness. The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come, however, teaches the most profound lesson of all: unless he changes, no one will care if Scrooge dies. Because of the Ghosts, by Christmas morning Ebenezer Scrooge is a completely different person from the man who went to bed on Christmas Eve.
Christmas is a special time of year that deserves to be remembered for its true meaning. Every year, Christmas becomes more and more commercialized and society forgets the origin of Christmas. It was not started with cookies, toys, and a fat man that delivers them, but instead it started with a humble inn where our Savior was born. The definition of Christmas is “a holiday on December 25 celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ.” Nowhere in that definition does it say anything about the outrageous pressure society has set on consumers to buy, buy, buy during the Christmas season. "Time to get up, time to get up, let’s go let’s go,” yelled my nine-year-old cousin Kevin as he pulls off my warm blanket. The harsh cold of the Wisconsin Cabin wakes my 10 year old body up instantly. On any other day I would unleashed a fury of strikes to his chest that would leave him gasping for air, but on this occasion I gave him a pass. I leapt off of the top bunk bed with a grace and agility that is second only to members of the cat family. The cabin’s filled with radiant hues of red and orange from the dawning sun. The savory smell of honey glazed ham filled my lungs and my mouth began to water. Food is the last thing on my mind. My job was to assist my cousins with the daunting task of waking every single person in our 9 room cabin rental. It’s Christmas, but it won’t officially begin until EVERYONE’S present.
People may think that Christmas in other places around the world is very similar to Christmas in the United states, but It is actually very different, for example in Russia there are lots of differences. Instead of being called Christmas the name it is being changed to the ¨Festival of Winter.¨ People say special prayers and fast. They sometimes fast for up to 39 days! They wait until january 6th (which is Christmas eve). When they see the first evening star and they have a twelve course supper. They do this in honor of the twelve apostles. Also, people put hay on the floor hoping that that will make horse feed grow. One more thing that they do is they make clucking noises to encourage hens to lay eggs.
Who wouldn’t think Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year? Santa comes to give presents to good people who have done good things each Christmas. People anticipate to see what presents they will get for Christmas each year. Families get together for the holiday and play games, talk, and celebrate what Christmas is all about. Christmas is all about Christ, and people learn about Him by listening to the radio, which may play Christmas carols, such as Carol of the Bells.
