People may think that Christmas in other places around the world is very similar to Christmas in the United states, but It is actually very different, for example in Russia there are lots of differences. Instead of being called Christmas the name it is being changed to the ¨Festival of Winter.¨ People say special prayers and fast. They sometimes fast for up to 39 days! They wait until january 6th (which is Christmas eve). When they see the first evening star and they have a twelve course supper. They do this in honor of the twelve apostles. Also, people put hay on the floor hoping that that will make horse feed grow. One more thing that they do is they make clucking noises to encourage hens to lay eggs.

Christmas was originally supposed to be a celebration of the birthday of Jesus Christ. Modern historians suggest that Christ was actually born sometime in April, but that is hardly the point; the point is that a day on which to celebrate his birth and life was needed, and so one was chosen. During the season surrounding this holiday -- especially since it coincided with that of other, similar holidays -- it was thought right to honor Jesus by acting as he did, i.e., in a kind, generous, and forgiving manner. Out of this sprung the custom of giving gifts to loved ones on this holiday.

Latin American countries are especially passionate about Christmas. The way Hispanic people celebrate changes throughout each country. Each one has its own unique Christmas culture. When I was younger, the two holidays I looked forward to were always Thanksgiving and Christmas. This time of the year always is the happiest because everything feels so refreshing because I am spending quality time with the people I love most. When it comes to Thanksgiving and Christmas, I always seem to have the most memorable good and bad moments.
