Douglas Light said that our imagination is better than any answer to a question. Light distinguished between two genres: fantasy from fiction. He described how fantasy stimulates one’s imagination, which is more appealing, but fiction can just be a relatable story. In the same way, Books and movies are very different entities. In the short parable Doubt, the readers are lured in to the possibility of a scandalous relationship between a pastor and an alter boy. The readers’ curiosity is ignited because they are not given all the details. Therefore, their mind wanders further than the plot to create a story and characters that acted on one’s imagination; thus, the story became entertaining- flooded by the questions of what? Who? How? By which the reader can only answer. At this point, the readers create their own movie in a way. They will determine important aspects: how the character speaks, looks like, and reacts. Whereas, in the movie, the reader has no choice but to follow the plot laid out in front of them. No longer can they picture the characters in their own way or come up with their different portrayals. The fate of the story, while still unpredictable, was highly influenced by the way the characters looked, spoke, and presented themselves on screen. The movie leaves little to viewers' imaginations.In order to be entertained by literature or art, the viewer needs to feel that they can use their imagination and not be confined to a plot that reveals all. In the parable Doubt, the controversial topics presented by John Patrick Shanley sparked differing views that the reader was torn between..It introduced a storyline revolved around a nun accusing a pastor of partaking in inappropriate engagement amongst the alter boys. We want to relate to it in a way that can only be done through out imagination. So, due to this, when we are not given the flexibility, then the context no longer becomes entertaining. The viewers do not want to be told how to think. Given these points, if they are influenced to believe that Sister Aloysius is a cruel individual like the movie portrays, then at the end of the movie and book when Sister Aloysius says, “ I have doubts! I have such doubts!” they will take that as a confession from her, and be further lead to believe that the accusations against Father Flynn are false. I think John Patrick Shanley chooses specific diction to create a conflict that has no precise resolution,he wanted the reader get lost in story and enter into their own story manifested within.

A very common saying is “Don’t judge a book by its cover” which essentially means that everything is not always as it seems, there is usually much more to the story than what meets the eye. Death of a Salesman and “The Cat’s Table” both involve major elements proving that not everything is black and white, including setting, point of view, and symbolism. All of these crucial parts of literature help in proving that there is always more to a story, and that people do deserve the benefit of the doubt.
In The Parable several characters are presented to the reader. Each one has their own behavioral characteristics which one may or my not approve of. The two characters whose behaviors I most approve of are Lee Pai and Hernando. The characters whose behaviors I do not approve of are Sven and John. There are several reasons why I approve of the behaviors of Lee Pai and Hernando and do not approve of the behaviors of Sven and John. All of these reasons I have based on my interpretation of the story, The Parable.
Before taking this course, I always looked at films and read books just as the average person does; interesting plot and how long will it hold my interest, but this course gave me an entire different perspective when watching films and reading books. Now that I have taken this course and have watched the required films, the most important thing when watching other movies and reading books, is the meaning behind each scene and how they relate and affect our world. In literature, authors procure to convey a message to the reader. Whether the message is good or bad, a reader can always learn something from a work of literature. When an author conveys a strong message, directors will want to create films that portray the same message. That desire to portray a novel’s message in a film will result in a film inspired by a novel. With this being said, a film may be created, but it will not always portray the message the same way a novel does. Both try to win Sister James over throughout the play, however, Sister Aloysius succeeds in the end. Father Flynn’s opinion of Sister Aloysius is made clear in the beginning of the film when he uses zoomorphism to describe her and says, “The dragon is hungry.” Sister Aloysius attempts to make the situation clear to Sister James and asks, “What have you seen?” (21). Shanley returns to the motif of vision to show that Sister Aloysius wants Sister James to open her eyes and see the truth about Father Flynn, that he may be molesting Donald Muller. Sister James is quick to switch sides in parts of the play though. When Father Flynn tells them that Donald stole the altar wine and he did not give it to him she is overwhelmed with relief saying, “Oh, what a relief! That explains everything! Thanks be to God! Oh, Sister, look, it’s all a mistake!” (34). In the epigraphs at the beginning of the novel, the quote “The bad sleep well” applies to Sister James at the end of the play and shows the effect that Sister Aloysius had on her. Sister James tells Father Flynn, Oh I can’t sleep. Actually one bad dream and then I haven’t slept right since” (58). Sister James finally sees the guilt in the world that Sister Aloysius wanted her to see. She is the good in the world and sees the cruelness of Father Flynn
Authors often make use of rhetorical strategies for additional effects, appeals to the reader, relating to an audience, or even for simply drawing attention to a specific section/part of a work. Nonetheless, these Rhetorical Strategies can prove crucial in the unraveling of such a work. The preceding is the case for a work entitled Something Wicked This Way Comes, by Ray Bradbury. Within the context of the story, a circus enters a small town and changes its overall atmosphere with never before seen mystical evils. Only two boys, Will Halloway and Jim Nightshade, stand in their way. These uncanny occurrences bring out the morality and malevolence of several characters in the story. In Bradbury’s work, there are many discrepancies in the moralities of each character relative to the development of the plot and their overall portrayal in the novel. Bradbury adds many instances in which certain characters have to make a choice between what they wish to do and what they should do. Such decisions accurately portray the conflict as an internal discontinuity between the ultimatums of good and evil. Thus, making the readers question his or her interpretation of each and challenge the societal parameters that encompass them.
Their personalities are drastically different. Sister Aloysius was shown to be the not most agreeable person. Father Flynn was considerate and wanted to have a warm and loving relationship with the students so that the school will be a welcoming environment. "I think the message of the Second Ecumenical Council was that the church needs to take on more familiar face. Reflect the local community. We should sing a song from the radio now and then. Take the kids out for ice-cream." (Shanley 47) Sister James is naïve and innocent which allows her to be easily influenced. From the way that other characters relate to Sister Aloysius, it is learned that she is a fearful person. The students are afraid of her and Father Flynn is standing up for the students. Father Flynn is the type of person who liked his nails long and sugar in his tea. Sister Aloysius is so strict and she even mentioned how Frosty the Snowman shouldn’t be performed due to the magical element of the snowman coming to life. (Shanley 44) This causes an obstacle between the relationship of Father Flynn and Sister Aloysius. The conflict was worsened when Sister James reported to Sister Aloysius that Donald Muller was called out of class by Father Flynn and came back with alcohol in his breath and was acting unsettled. (Shanley 37) Sister Aloysius presented her id impulse, for Father Flynn to leave in an acceptable way
Have you ever watched a movie or read a novel without a plot? Most likely your answer to this question would be no, because it would be dull. No one wants to hear a story with no intrigue or conflict. As you read a novel or watch a film, you want to connect with the characters and feel you can relate to the situations they’re dealing with. In every film and every story there’s a conflict the main character(s) is facing. The story of King Arthur, and the film With Honors appear at first to be on opposite sides of the entertainment spectrum. However, both are excellent examples of searching for ones inner human, and life’s meaning.
Due to production costs and financial restrictions, the director and screenplay writer can never fully reproduce an entire literary work into a screen version. With the complications of time restriction in major motion pictures, a full-length novel is compacted into a two-hour film. This commonly leads to the interference in the sequence of events, alternation of plots and themes, and the elimination of important characters or events. But the one true adversary of novel-based films is Hollywood fabrication. Producers, directors, and playwrights add or eliminate events and characters that might or might not pertain to the storyline for the sake of visual appeal, therefore defacing the author’s work.
Some of these phrases, such as "There are things I can't say," seem to imply a level of shame and possibly guilt. However, Father Flynn firmly claims, "I have not done anything wrong." Ultimately, it is up to the audience to determine guilt or innocence, or whether or not such rulings are even possible, given the sketchy bits of evidence delivered by Shanley's drama.
Sometimes, I wonder why the author wrote this story, to gross us out in the beginning or to make us wonder, what in the world is this? But I guess, the author just wrote it to show us a lesson, but to also let us just read it for fun. Father Flynn is he really a man of god or does he have the devil inside him? The play Doubt by Patrick Shanley is based around Sister Aloysius accusation of rape against Father Flynn. Sister Aloysius believes this because after the boy Donald Muller had a private talk with Father Flynn he had alcohol breath. Sister Aloysius tries to prove Father Flynn forced Donald to drink the alcohol to allow him access. While Father Flynn claims he was scolding Donald Muller for drinking alcohol from the altar and didn’t want to reveal what had happened because it would force him to remove Donald Muller from the altar boys. Based on the Evidence in Patrick Shanley’s play, Doubt: A Parable, I conclude Father Flynn is Innocent because of Sister Aloysius fixed opinion and Sister Aloysius belief of human nature.
