What it is
The ISO 9000 series is the International Organization for Standardization's family of standards for quality management. They provide standardised requirements for business quality management systems to ensure satisfaction of customers and stakeholders. It is made up of 3 standards, ISO 9000, which details the definitions and terminology to explain the concepts used in the other parts of the standard, ISO 9001 which contains requirements for certification and ISO 9004 provides a set of guidelines for developing systems not covered in ISO 9001.
The ISO 9000 standards are based on eight quality management (QM) principles chosen for their ability to improve performance and achieve success. They are aimed at senior management as a framework to guide their organisations towards improved performance.

• Leadership
Leaders should establish a uniformity to set the direction of the company, and should construct an atmosphere that encourages people to achieve the organisations objectives.

• Process approach
A desired result is achieved more efficiently when activities and related resources are managed as a process.
• System approach to management
Using a systems approach to manage their interrelated processes, and identifying and treating these processes as a system.

Making a commitment to continually improve overall performance.
