In Secrets and Lies we are initially presented with several broken characters, people who have not been truly happy or in a true friendship in a long time. Their relationships are full of secrets, lies, hatred and distrust. Cynthia is introduced to us as a nervous wreck, hated by her daughter and almost everyone she knows, possibly excepting her brother Maurice. Throughout the movie the characters do not change much, but by the end of the movie they have been forced to be much more honest with each other, and there is a suggestion that their relationships with each other are starting to take a turn for the better.
Hortense’s involvement in the story is the starting point of the characters’ self development. Hortense provides Cynthia with more confidence within herself, leading to her decision to be honest with her daughter Jane. Cynthia has only experienced negativity from others towards her for a long time and this new friendship starts to show her that she is capable of having an honest relationship. When she meets Hortense and starts to get to know her, she has a clean slate. She has no secrets from Hortense and she does not want to have any secrets from her. When she sees how happy she is becoming in this friendship, she realises that she needs to be honest with her daughter.
Cynthia does change from when we first see her to when she finally decides to tell Jane about her other daughter, Hortense, but the real changes in her and her relationships are yet to come. Now that she has been so courageous and honest, she has no choice but to change. The new addition of Hortense to the family is a major event in her and her daughter’s life, which forces them to change. While we don’t actually see most of the change which will oc...

From my two texts, I can deduce that Changing Self texts do suggest that personal growth is bound up with courageous and honest relationships, however not all Changing Self texts actually show the entire story. In Secrets and Lies we see the build up to an outburst of honesty, and the suggestion of the change which will result. The honesty itself involved a lot of personal growth also, but the suggestion is that the characters’ new, more courageous and honest relationships will promote a much larger amount of personal growth, as they help each other to become better people. In Up and Up, the message is that we should be honest with others about who we are, rather than trying to prove ourselves by being something we’re not.
Persevering against an old self, that self people are trying to change, will help them achieve their goals.
Clemencia doesn’t want to take the place of Megan, or of any other fooled white woman but instead accepts the fact that she will never be the wife, but always the mistress in contrast to an anglo lady and she is...
Corruption is present in every city and government in one form or another. However, to counterbalance corruption, society needs a form of structure to function properly, whether structures involve features of intimacy and love or civility and trust. Society will see that the majority of people will react positively to have forms of love and trust. Intimacy and love are vastly different compared to civility and trust: I believe that intimacy and love works better in situation with fewer but civility and trust is better situated for larger groups. Thus, I am going to argue that civility and trust outranks intimacy and love in which trust has a greater important to society.
Because of the life that Christine leads, the role of mother and daughter are switched and Rayona often finds herself watching out for her mom. When Ray comes home from school, she would often learn that her mother had gone out to party. Times like this meant that Rayona had to care for herself. It is not uncommon for one to stay out late; but when it is the parent who is doing so, one must question the responsibility of the person. When Christine leaves the hospital, Rayona shows up and helps prevent a potential disaster. She realizes what her mother plans to do, and that her mom will not crash the car with her on board. While Christine is not very reliable, she has no wish to hurt Rayona either; Ray's prediction was correct. As a child, Rayona must fulfill more obligations than a normal teen. Over the time that leads to her abandonment, Rayona begins to feel displaced from her mother. Christine's increasing self concern causes Rayona to feel her mom is ignoring her, when that is not true at all.

In the short story “The Cheater’s Guide to Love” by Junot Diaz, the author pinpoints on the Yunior’s life as a writer and college professor who is also struggling with his romantic relationships. The short story is filled with his experiences of using women for his beneficial needs and how it negatively affects him. It focuses on Yunior’s downfall through life after the destruction of his relationship with his fiance. The diction includes the narrator’s hateful consideration of women and a paradox of his own endeavors which prevent him from pursuing a meaningful relationship, but he grows to realize that he treats women awfully and his ex did the right thing by leaving him due to his untruthfulness.
Evidently, with what readers presume to be the “man of her dreams”, Clemencia's mother seems to be in her own world as she completely disregards her life with her former husband and their children. This does not bode well for Clemencia as she holds a lot of resentment towards her mother, that will likely never resolve due to the fact that Clemencia's mom is not around in the world anymore. Even though, her mother may not be in this world anymore, Clemencia will always wonder why her mom did marry her father.
The article “Cherish Yourself: Longitudinal Patterns and Conditions of Self- Esteem Change in the Transition to Young Adulthood” (here in after referred to as “Cherish Yourself”) was about a study that was conducted to see if individuals self- esteem changes throughout an individual’s lifetime. The researchers where studying three main points in this study. The first point to see if individual’s self-esteem changes when they leave high school and enter adulthood. The researchers predicted that self-esteem would have a nonlinear pattern at first but then it would start to increase in young adulthood. The second point that was studied was to determine if structura...
...ider. The central lesson of the show is the lies you tell hurt you the most in the end. All characters on the show have told lies to one another to protect themselves from humiliation, embarrassment and exposure. Throughout the show majority of the relationships were broken because of lies. Serena’s relationships suffer majority of the time from secrets. Serena was desperately trying to reinvent herself at the time, and so she wanted to shield Dan from her “party girl past,” essentially this back- fired and Dan felt as if he did not know the true Serena that he could appreciate and ended the relationship. Chuck and Blair’s relationship as well suffered from many secrets, when Chuck was about to loose his hotel empire to his vindictive Uncle Jack Bass, Blair sacrificed herself for Chuck. When Chuck came to know he was furious that Blair did such a thing to help him.
The Literary theme that has captivated my interest and has moved me to research and understand the content which it describes or analyze , would be The Ambition of Self improvement. This theme can be related with psychoanalytic criticism. The story that has inspired me to study this theme comes from a short fiction story written by Amy Tan, named “Two Kinds”. This story has primary conflict between mother and daughter, with self improvement being the main theme identified in the text. Conflict that emerges between parents and children are still common factors current in society today. Personal experiences readers have had growing up can ignite an interest for readers to seek understanding of self improvement and the factors of Psychoanalytic criticism that adopt in them.
In Mother Holle, there is a struggle between the forces of good and evil. The conflict between good and evil is characterized by the pretty sister and Mother Holle versus the ugly sister and the sisters' mother. The mother is evil and has one daughter and a step-daughter who she takes care of. The step-daughter is pretty and hard-working and the real daughter is ugly and lazy. Instead of making the ugly daughter work to get rid of her laziness, she makes the pretty girl do all of the house work and allows the ugly daughter to remain lazy, but the pretty girl does not complain.
... minor flaws but now I understand that being content simply is just choosing to be. Obviously, the change of one’s approach to life is not instantaneous and will take time and effort but that is where my new found optimism comes into play.
...o, who she cares about for the sake of Bassanio. Jessica gives up her family ties to marry Lorenzo. Even Gratiano and Nerissa are devoted to one another. The play is truly about the happiness that true love brings.
