Food products are going organic, tourists are becoming more eco-conscious and the trend of tourism is changing too. This is due to the rapid depletion rate of natural resources; much faster than what mankind can replenish or renew. Hence, in order to preserve our environment, culture and tradition, people are trying to find ways to sustain our resources.
Lately, the buzz word that is frequently mentioned in tourism industry is sustainable tourism. Sustainable tourism is tourism that takes full account of its current and future economic, social and environmental impacts, addressing the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment and host communities (UNWTO, 2005). The issue of sustainable development came to people's attention when nature began to deteriorate. For example, ozone depletion, favouritism against races, culture intensify (Gisolf, 2010). Resorts which are closely related to hospitality and tourism industry realised the urge to operate sustainably and meet market's demand. According to World Tourism Organization (2013), the three principles of sustainable tourism are maximising the use of environmental resources, respect the socio-cultural authenticity of host communities and provide economic benefits to all stakeholders. Stakeholders are people who can affect or be affected either directly or indirectly by decisions, rules and regulations of an organization (BusinessDictionary.com 2013). In sustainable tourism, the stakeholders are planning authorities, businesses, tourists and non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

The sustainability term could be defined as an ability or capacity of something to be maintained or to sustain itself. Sustainability is about taking what we need to live now, without jeopardising the potential for people in the future to meet their needs. If an activity is said to be sustainable, it should be able to continue forever. Therefore sustainable tourism refers to tourism development that that avoids damage to the environment, economy, and culture of the locations where it take place. The aim of sustainable tourism is to ensure that development is positive for the local people, tourism companies as well as the tourists themselves. Taking such an approach of sustainable tourism development is quite beneficial and minimizes conflicts of interest.

In 1992, Rio Earth Summit, the World Tourism Organization and the World Travel and Tourism Council published Agenda 21 which mentioned the importance of sustainable development and defined the environmental and social impacts associated with hotel operation that should be minimized (Meade and Pringle, 2001). Nowadays, hospitality operations concern more about environmental sustainability because hotel sustainability might be a unique selling point for attracting environmentally sensitive customers and add extra value of influencing the customers’ choice of vacation decisions (Sloan, Legrand and Chen, 2013). Moreover, hotels have been valued as a key trading partner in tourism, therefore, the hospitality industry has a significant
According to the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP), three dimensions are necessary to guarantee the long-term sustainability of tourism. It should make optimal use of environmental resources that constitute a key element in tourism development, maintain essential ecological processes and help conserve natural heritage and biodiversity, respect the socio-cultural authenticity of host communities, conserve their built and living cultural heritage and traditional values, and contribute to inter-cultural understanding and tolerance; and ensure viable, long-term economic operations, providing socio-economic benefits to all stakeholders that are fairly distributed, including stable employment and income-earning opportunities and social services to host communities, and contributing to poverty
“A stakeholder is anyone who participates in the project or who will be affected by the results of the project, and may include…people and groups within and outside of the organization” (Brown & Hyer, 2010, p.107-108). In the article, “Stakeholders’ Contribution in Sustainable Tourism” A. Kadi, M. Jaafar, & F. Hassan (2015) seeks to explain how tourism stakeholders affect tourism destinations and the need for collaboration between all the stakeholders. After reading the article, I found that the findings supported how the stakeholders influenced tourism and the packages offered through economic impact on tourism destinations in which Kadi, Jaafar, & Hassan attempt to make known through highlighting the issues and challenges in the tourism industry.
