During the early 19th century, the idea of Imperialism affected many areas of the world. Imperialism is a policy that many European countries (Great Britain, Germany, France, Russia, etc.) implemented in the Middle East, Asia, and Africa. They used both political and military forces to gain control of these areas. Many Europeans did it for economic reasons as well as feeling the need to transform these “native people” into a civilized society. Many tried to convert the natives to Christianity as well. European countries fought to gain political power in these territories to continue to grow their own countries wealth. In the Middle East, India was greatly affected by Europe’s imperialism ideals. Great Britain and France both had major trading ports located in India. Though, unlike the Chinese and India who tried to resist the Europeans, Japan embraced them to some degree. It is believed that the introduction of European ideas had a positive impact on the Japanese culture. When Matthew Perry traveled to Japan seeking to begin a trading system with them, the Japanese officials decided to open their once isolated boarders. They opened their boarders primarily due to the Americans threating to attack Japan. This began Japans expansion in technologies as well as their own quest to adopt the idea of imperialism. They looked at the Western world as a place of ideas and began to experiment with these ideas. The Japanese began building ships and creating railroads that stretched across Japan. Though new Western ideas flooded they were still able to keep their culture due to not being colonized by the Europeans or the Americans. They soon began to try to dominate the countries throughout Asia. The Japanese were able to build their country due to the Europeans Imperialism
