History and Type of Eating Disorders

Eating disorders have affected people in the past and continue to do so at this point in time. They have a long history of being one of the deadliest mental illness and everyone is at risk of getting the eating disorder. Throughout history many people have been affected by eating disorders. In ancient Greece and ancient Rome people would starve themselves because they believed that food was causing disease. They would also vomit, so that later they can eat even more, the people would throw up in vomitoriums. In the early Middle Ages, the population would believe that anorexia was miraculous. Anorexia was tied to the fasting so that they can have an excuse to starve themselves. The people would starve themselves because they assumed that they were not good enough in the face of their God. During this time period people who were anorexic were admired. Later on during the Middle Ages, people started to believe that it was evil, that it was the work of the devil. In the year 1689, Richard Morton was the first person to notice and white about it has a problem. During the 19th century, the doctors realized that the illness is a separate thing on its own. During this century, this was the beginning of the “Rich White Girls Disease.” The rich white girls wanted to look different from the working class. They also found out that family played a role in why people starved themselves. In 1870, someone named Sir William Witney found out that the mental illness was in the patient’s mind. Later on during the 20th century, there was a “thin is in” movement during the late 60s and 70s. During this time, society for the first time looked at the problem. In conclusion, eating disorders have existed for a really long time and have not been noticeable until recently. Although people are still trying to thoroughly understand the illness, they have found that eating disorders lead up to have effects on the human body and can sometimes lead up to death. Many people believe that only girls get the illness but also men are at risk. There are many treatments going on so that they can help people overcome their mental illness. Works Cited DoSomething.
