I am at my best when I help others and enjoy engaging others, as they grow closer to Christ, through my work as a music minister. I minister to numerous people of different cultural background. Currently, I minister to two specific cultures. At Holy Family and St. Denis Catholic Churches of Versailles, Ohio, I minister to a predominantly rural community of Catholic farmers. Additionally, I minister to the Latino community of La Parroquia de San Gabriel here in Indianapolis. I began working in Versailles at the age of 13 and have continued to the present. Through this ministry, I built up the existing music ministry program through both musical and pastoral formation. However, I was first fostered in these disciplines. I attended conferences, workshops, scripture studies and prayer groups to form myself spiritually, and I took piano and theory lessons and voice lessons to further form myself as a musician. As a result I was able to share my knowledge with fellow music ministers, namely the choir and cantors under my direction, and also with my congregation. My formation was challenged during the implementation of the newest General Instruction of the Roman Missal in late 2011. I attended additional conferences and trainings to further develop my understanding of the new translation and what it meant for music ministry, as well as teaching the theology behind the changes to a frustrated choir, composed of members who remember the pre-Vatican II Church. Now, here at Marian University-Indianapolis and especially at La Parroquia de San Gabriel, I have been challenge in many new ways.

...speaking, there is an infinite amount of preparation that comes into play to be a successful music minister, including a solid foundation of musical knowledge and a practical knowledge of the Liturgy and those rules that govern the use of music within Liturgy, both along with the minister’s personal spiritual and faith development. Additionally, there is a fair amount of rehearsing and preparation necessary for each liturgical celebration. However, when ministry happens, it is about allowing the Holy Spirit to come be our guide. In that moment of creating a bilingual refrain, my primary concern was uniting the community in their native languages. My education and formation from the past seven years flowed through me, but in essence, ministry cannot be defined. As a service to God, ministry cannot live within the confines created by man: it is divinely inspired.
Religion has been an important part of man’s life. Man has allowed religion to control and influence his life in many different ways, affecting both his behavior and his actions. So its not surprising that music, one of man’s earliest expressive forms, has also been influenced by religion. Religion has had an effect on man’s music all throughout history, from the early Egyptians to even now. So it is only natural that Western music should also have been affected by religion. Western music, and its development by composers, has been strongly influenced by the Christian religion, especially in the Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque periods. The music in these periods laid the foundation for all the different types of music we enjoy today.

The time between 1485 and 1660 marked a period of new beginnings for the people living in England; this time is known as the Renaissance. In England, the people were challenging their past beliefs; where before the Renaissance, England thrived basing their lives, government, and music off of God and his principles alone. During these one-hundred and seventy-five years, the English people started questioning their original principles about religion and established a yearning for information and proof based off of science instead of God. This desire caused many changes to form in England. The Renaissance period quickly became known as the rebirth of knowledge named by the change from God’s knowledge to the knowledge of man. The Renaissance brought on many changes to English culture especially in their music. There was a rise in secular, or non-religious music, instrumental music, and dance music. Although the English Renaissance occurred many centuries ago, the major changes in musical styles are evident in both spiritual and secular music.
Within school, I have participated in Glee Club/Chorus and Drama Club. I have a strong interest and love of both and hope to continue with them in the future. Last year, I had the privilege of being selected for our school's select choir, North Naturals. The Congregation Sons of Israel in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania honored us with the chance to perform at their annual Holocaust Memorial Service. The Messiah College Women's Choir also invited us to perform as a guest in their annual spring concert, in which I performed a solo, along with some members of the Women's Chorus. This year, I consider it a great prestige to say I participate in my school's select choir for ninth- and tenth-graders- Cantamos. In Drama Club, I have performed a variety
In an age when culture continues to lower standards of intellect, Marva Dawn makes compelling observations and suggestions for the Church to rethink its’ strategy on impacting society. How do we evangelize without weakening the message of what we are communicating? The majority of her text focuses on the worship environment generally, but later she focuses on music, preaching, and liturgy specifically. According to Dawn, a gathering of believers should emphasize God as the subject and object of worship, challenge each individual to grow in godly character, and accentuate the community of believers (not only in the room, but throughout history as well). Through this grid, she encourages leaders and participants to evaluate each worship element. If these primary goals are accomplished, then worship will not be empty and simpleminded. Instead the worship atmosphere would be held to a higher standard and, she believes, both pleasing to God and attractive to those who do not know God.
What is music? Where did it come from? According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, music is defined as the science or art of ordering tones or sounds in succession, in combination, and in temporal relationships to produce a composition having unity and continuity (Music). There are many types of genres of music. Examples include classical, rock, rap, techno, metal, acoustic, pop and many others. Music is one of the most popular cultural aspects that we have adopted from ancient societies throughout history. Some forms of music date back to ancient civilizations of Egypt, China, India, Greece and Rome. Music can be used during every day activities such as working out, relaxation, for entertainment and also therapeutic uses. Many types of music therapy have been seen all over the world and also in different time periods. Music Therapy was used in the 20th century for World War One and World War Two veterans. Local musicians were hired to play in the local hospitals where veterans that were suffering both physically, emotionally and mentally were making progress towards recovery. Music therapy is still very common today. It gives an opportunity for a musical therapist to work with people of all different ages and varying disabilities. In order to become a musical therapist, a person must have some special qualities. Some of these include basic understanding of music, the willingness to help people, patience, creativity, empathetic and supportive. According to the Cancer Association society “ Music therapy may be used to encourage emotional expression, promote social interaction, relieve symptoms, and for other purposes.”
During the summer after I graduated from high school, the pastor of Pine Grove Baptist Church, Pastor Ron Barber, and his wife, Mary-Beth, approached me about committing to their ministry full-time. After a few weeks of thoughtful consideration, I decided that this would be a wonderful opportunity to improve my musical abilities and gain experience. For just over two years, I’ve been Pine Grove’s only full-time pianist. Over the course of this past semester, I volunteered an average of three hours per week at Pine Grove Baptist Church; and I was overwhelmingly grateful to receive credit for my time.
The Black Voices, Gospel Choir, had a huge impact on the lives of students in the study. It helped African American students to create a sense of belonging on predominantly White Institution. By establishing a sense of belonging on campus, while reducing feelings of marginalization, gospel choir participation enabled African American students at a PWI to persist in college. The Black Voices afforded participants opportunities to develop ethnic pride and understanding. Despite differences in the impetus for their involvement in the gospel choir, participants identified advancing knowledge about Black culture and the Black community on campus, representing the Black race to White peers and faculty members, and learning about one’s own culture.
...ore significant of an impact than it does now, if the heart of the Church doesn’t change. It’s stuck. At the same time, I can perceive in various people a certain movement that the conventional church fails to recognize because it’s not explicit doctrine. It involves personal responsibility, empathy, and most importantly, a humility in oneself concerning the fate of their own soul, in favor of the well-being of others. I believe the artists among them are doing powerful things, I believe that the whole world sees it, and I further believe that God works through them. In a world that mocks Christ, they unknowingly embrace him with open arms, more by the more.
Music has been relevant in Christianity since its beginnings. Some of the first music was written in Latin and they were called Hymns. “Hymn is a song of praise” (Van Camp) and were sung only by catholic churches. When Martin Luther led the Protestant Reformation and helped create Protestant Christianity, he began translating hymns into German. All around Europe people were translating hymns into different languages. These translations were brought over by European settlers coming to America and were used frequently in both Catholic and Protestant churches.
Music is enhanced by gospel music in several ways. Some might say the meaning in the song or the lyrics enhance/s it. Others might say the melody and the beat enhance it. Few others might say that the cross culture of the music enhance it. But everyone has their own meaning of music enhancing their lives. In this paper I will explain how music is enhanced by gospel music and I will give a repoire of how a certain artist has more than usual enhanced my life through his God-filled/ gospel music.
