In Shakespeare time, marriage was seen as a wealthy and social commitment and didn’t involved love. In the Elizabethan Era, women were believed to be inferior to men and were expected to obey men without exceptions. Marriage was seen as business relationships were money was involved, this explained the relationship between men and women and their interests in marriage. Marriages between wealthy families were very common in that time, and were expected to increase the family fortune. For marriage women were expected to have their own ‘dowry’ which in that time was their money and properties they inherited after marriage. However, in their marriage the women lose all their possessions and came to be their husband’s properties. A good example of a marriage done by social commitment is the marriage between Petruchio and Katherina. The only reason Petruchio wants to be with her is because of her money. As a result this shows how men show no romance towards women.
The Taming of the Shrew is a play set in Padua, Italy. It begins with four men desiring to marry Bianca, Baptista’s youngest daughter. However, Baptista tells them that no one will marry Bianca unless he finds a husband for Katherina, his oldest daughter. No one wanted to marry Katherina because of her harsh personality, but Hortensio and Gremio decides to look for a husband for Katherina. To their surprise, Petruchio from Verona comes to Padua seeking for a wife to improve his financial situation. We knew what he was looking by what he said “To wive and thrive as best I may,” when he is telling Hortensio why he came to Padua. In conclusion, Shakespeare uses different ways to show how marriage is connected to the kind of male and female characters portrayed in the play. We can see from the use of clothes to disguise themselves to pretend they are someone else, to the way taming is portrayed to control other characters, how women were considered in that time. They were first court by lovely ways and in marriage they were treated as an inferior sex to them. Women were forced to deal with their husband in silent without saying anything to anyone. We can perceive that this play is just about social position to be able to marry who you want to be with. And most important, money is the main reason people got married in that time.
