Recommended: New orleans culture essay

Imagine living in Mid-city; There are several reasons why Mid-city is the heart of New Orleans and its people. People think Mid-City is just a normal but its not, its the eye catcher of New Orleans. Mid-city is the area where all cultures (Black, White, Indian, Chinese and more) meet (Mid-City Snapshot 1). The population after Hurricane Katrina decreased dramatically. Most homes are modern old architecture shot-gun houses. The violence reached a climatic rate after Katrina. Now, the city is under recovery and still progressing in the movement (Mid-City Snapshot 1). Mid-City is located at the center of New Orleans, mid-way between the Mississippi River and Lake Pontchartrain. Mid-City is where the French and Spanish of New Orleans combine. Mid-city divides uptown from downtown. Unlike, every other neighborhood Mid-City is unique. Mid-city consist of the 3rd ward, 4th ward, some parts of the 7th ward and some parts from uptown. The slaves and history museums is one of the main attractions. The Spanish and French restaurants would be the main attraction (Mid-City 1). After the devastation of Katrina, mid-city changed forever. The schools, churches, homes, families, and neighborhood changed. There are maybe 2 schools in the area which is dramatically poor to the community compared to the population of the people. Before Katrina in 2000, the population of Mid-City was nearly 20,000 living in 5,830 households (Mid-City Organization 1). Mid- City population still has the highest percentage of Hispanic people which is 10 throughout any neighborhood (Mid-City Snapshot 1). The area is slow coming back to the form it was in before Katrina; however the population is at a standstill. Including both of these crimes the Mid-City gang was 18% percent of the murders in 2013 which is about 193 killings. (Vargas 1) Mid-City strives for better as they continue to bring back and build markets in the community, such as Circle Food Store, Whole Foods, Family Dollar, and much more. The owners of all these stores say that “this will bring back New Orleans before Katrina”. Whole Foods is a new addition to the community, which is one of the community advantages instead of going so far to get food and kitchen appliances (Sayre 1). Circle Food Store has been around for so long, and the fact that it has opened back up has given the community hope for a new environment. This hurricane displaced virtually the entire population of the city as a result of massive flooding caused by the levees breaking and Lake Pontchartrain emptying its waters into 80% of the city. Soon after the tragedy, statistical observers began predicting who would make a return to the Crescent City. The most widely accepted predictions were that New Orleans would become both wealthier and whiter as a result of “selective migration” (Fussell, Sastry, and Vanlandingham 1). Their predictions were correct. Black residents returned to the city at a much slower rate than white residents did, and that is without even taking the socioeconomic variables into account. The racial disparities were caused mostly because the areas that experienced greater flooding and more damage were areas like the Lower Ninth Ward, an area notorious for its African American lower class population. Did this happen by coincidence? Or were these areas’ homes poorly constructed as a result of socioeconomic factors? Only 30 percent of the low-income neighborhoods’ residents have returned in contrast with the rest of the city, which has had almost a 90 percent return rate (Al Jazeera). Why is that? What happened after Katrina that caused so many people to leave the “Big Easy” forever?
