As digital reading has increased in today’s society, certain genres are more on the rise in our everyday lives. People now tend to read more on the fictional level. Romance is one of the most mass produced genres there is. Most readers prefer to read about love in which they can have in interest within the romantic expression. In Larissa MacFarquhar article “Who Cares If Johnny Can’t Read?” she describes how the genre fiction is the bulk of the American book market. MacFarquhar claims that “Romance readers are especially devoted. The average romance reader spends $ 1,200 a year on books and often comes to think of her favorite authors as close friends” (1). MacFarquhar recognizes romance novels to be on the rise in today’s society.
Readers prefer fictional novels in a way that they can relax and relate to the stories. Romance is on the rise in movies and novels. People want to be entertained by the stimulation of romance and love. MarFarquhar makes the point when she says “the point of romance novel is not to dazzle its reader with originality, but to stimulate predictable emotions by means of familiar cultural symbols” (1). Because everyone wants to believe in the fairy tale of love, they relate real life experiences with fictional characters. Readers want to be able to express their feelings by relating to a book. However, readers love being swept away by the exploration of love. It’s not always an easy path and that’s what makes it realistic, but by the last page of the book you get to sigh with pleasure as another couple commits to each other. The setting and circumstances certainly add to the experience but in the end readers are always won over by the romance.

Although MacFarquhar argues against the widely held view that our culture is in decline because television watching Americans don’t read as devotedly as they used to, romance novels and self-help books are popular among Americans. Fiction is preferred by readers. Reading is an important skill needed by people all over. Romance novels in our society today let us explore the world from a different aspect. Reading is at an all-time high. Having novels to trigger our emotions lets authors know that their novels make our world spin. Being able to engage in books in which we can visualize the characters shows that reading has evolved. From young children to the elderly, romance is in the air with fairy tales and erotic stories.
