Similarly as day and night is caused by the turning of the Earth and the seasons are caused by the Earth's circle around the sun some antiquated societies believed there is a considerably larger cycle that impacts the ascent and fall of human advancements. History and astronomy may enable us to rediscover this cycle, a cycle said to be so tremendous it dwarfs our own planetary system yet affects our everyday lives. In The Republic Plato called it “the great year”. As i discussed previously, most historians date the rise of humanity to be around 3500 BC with the rise of Sumer and Egypt but over the last few decades it has become clear there were many ancient societies much more advanced than we are today. This cycle of the ages was given different names by different cultures. To the Greeks it was the great year broken down into four periods: iron, bronze, silver and gold, each year having distinct characteristics of manifestation. The sages of ancient India called it the Yuga cycle. The most common name for this cycle was coined by the Romans as the ‘procession of the equinox’. Ancient star watchers observed that certain constellations followed the same path in the sky as the sun. This is also seen through examination of the mayan calendars. These 12 constellations make up the zodiac and are considered the most important. Twice each year on the day of the equinox ancient astonomers realized that overtime the constellations were not in the exact place in the sky that they had been in the year before. The stars seemed to be moving backwards in the sky, a movement known as the procession of the equinox or the wobble of the earth. This is evidenced by the destruction of the Library of Alexandria which was the last great library that held vast archives of manuscripts and books from all over the world pertaining to Philosophy, Astronomy, Health, Science, Geology, Mysticism, magic and knowledge of the spiritual world.
