In the story “Young Goodman Brown” by Nathaniel Hawthorne, the protagonist Goodman Brown leaves his home and wife Faith, “at sunset”, to unknowingly go through a spiritual journey through the forest where he meets with the devil which eventually divides his perception of good and evil (325). He does not foresee that this journey is a puritan conversion process to denounce original sin (an evil they are born with), which requires him to atone alone. He instead relies on the thoughts of his wife Faith to give him peace of mind, but is internally conflicted with the line between good and evil. As he travels deeper into the woods he comes across a devil worshiping by the people of Salem where he finds a “pink ribbon”, an item held by his wife, which leads him to believe that his wife “Faith is gone” and in turn come to a realization that “there is no good on earth” anymore (Hawthorne, 330). This is why Hawthorne gave Goodman Brown’s wife the name Faith, because she represents Brown’s internal faith and relationship with god. Even as he met with the man in the forest, “Faith kept me [Goodman Brown] back a while” to show that he was conflicted with his own faith on what the purpose of this journey was for (326). Hawthorne gives Faith a pink ribbon, which is a mix of red and white, to represent Brown’s actual faith; a mix of good and evil. In Brown’s eyes Faith is good and pure; a representation of what he believes his own personal faith to be. Goodman Brown relies on Faith to guide him through his journey, not knowing that this journey is meant to be traveled
