In 1835, Nathaniel Hawthorne published the tale of “Young Goodman Brown,” a tale that illustrates many configurations of symbolism used to leave the reader planting the pieces together through his characteristics of detail and imagery. Hawthorne’s prime analogy expressed throughout this tale is the loss of vulnerability and pureness when reaching maturity. The setting of Young Goodman Brown is in Salem, where the Salem witch craft trials were held in the 1600’s. This is the first symbol Hawthorne uses throughout the story as a test of who is innocent at this present time and who is not just as they did during the witch trials. Brown set off to the forest for an unknown ceremony leaving his new wife Faith behind. The name Faith symbolizes his personal faith in his own life and in his spirituality. Faith represents youth and innocence that was carried in his childhood. As we get further into detail the pink ribbons she wore in her hair were of some significance to the tale being conveyed. The pink ribbons exemplify the mix between red and white: red meaning evil and white innoce...
All three adventurers displayed their affection for the wilderness through how they lived after leaving society. After reaching Fairbanks, Alaska, McCandless set up his camp and began to live off the wildlife nearby. In his journal, he noted what he caught each day and showed his gratefulness through his writing font. He believed that “it [wildlife] was morally indefensible to waste any part of an animal that has been shot for food” (166). He tried his best to preserve the animals he shot for food, which in turn displayed his thoughts of nature as something precious.
Nathaniel Hawthorne is a nineteenth-century American writer of the Romantic Movement. Hawthorne was born is Salem, Massachusetts, and this is the place he used as the setting for some of his works: such as "The Scarlett Letter", "the Blithedale Romance" and "Young Goodman Brown". In writing, Hawthorne was known for his use of allegory and symbolism, which made his stories a joy for everyone to read. Hawthorne was said to be the first American writer who was conscious of the failure of modern man to realize his full capacity for moral growth. His stories contain much about the life he knew as a child being brought up in a Puritan society. As Hawthorne's writing continued it was filled with the same amount of sin and evil as his first writings. Evil that was revealed through his works. "Young Goodman Brown" was said to be one of the best stories ever written by Hawthorne (Adams70). "The Marble Faun: and "the Scarlett Letter were some of the other stories written by Hawthorne, and they were said to be "Young Goodman Brown" grown older. In this selection there is a question of maturity for Goodman Brown and whether he is good or evil. There is also a transition from childishness to adolescence to maturity. This short story in particular has a feeling of adultery, betrayal, and deception as in some of his other works. It was said by Richard P. Adams that "young Goodman Brown" was a germ for nearly all his best work that followed (Adams 71).

The story takes place in 17th century Puritan New England, a common setting for Hawthorne's works, and addresses the Calvinist/Puritan belief that all of humanity exists in a state of depravity, except those who are born in a state of grace. African Americans have a history of struggles because of racism and prejudices. Ever since the end of the Civil War, they struggled to benefit from their full rights that the Constitution promised. The fourteenth Amendment, which defined national citizenship, was passed in 1866. Even though African Americans were promised citizenship, they were still treated as if they were unequal. The South had an extremely difficult time accepting African Americans as equals, and did anything they could to prevent the desegregation of all races. During the Reconstruction Era, there were plans to end segregation; however, past prejudices and personal beliefs elongated the process.

Nathaniel Hawthorne utilizes symbolism throughout his short story Young Goodman Brown to impact and clarify the theme of good people sometimes doing bad things. Hawthorne uses a variety of light and dark imagery, names, and people to illustrate irony and different translations. Young Goodman Brown is a story about a man who comes to terms with the reality that people are imperfect and flawed and then dies a bitter death from the enlightenment of his journey through the woods. Images of darkness, symbolic representations of names and people and the journey through the woods all attribute to Hawthorne's theme of good people sometimes doing bad things.
One of the earliest uses of symbolism is Faith and her pink ribbons. Faith is Goodman Browns wife. The name faith is an early sign of symbolism. It represents the values of Goodman Brown. Without his Faith, both figuratively and literally, he would be nothing. Also Faith wears pink ribbons in her hair. The ribbons are mentioned early in the story. The color of the ribbons is very important, because if the ribbons were black for instance the reader might take Faith as being a dark, mysterious person. However because Hawthorne made these ribbons pink it makes the reader think that Faith is innocent and pure. Also not just the color, but the fact that she wears a ribbon in her hair also promotes innocence. The pink ribbons play a large role later on in the story when Goodman Brown is in the forest.

A supernovae happens where there is a change in the core, or center, of a star. A change can occur in two different ways with both resulting in a supernova.
The trait theory prevailed until the forties, passing these characteristics to be studied within a universalistic perspective....
Writing and technology are fascinating concepts when closely studied and understood. It seems as though they are connected in a way in which they are almost dependent upon each other for their existence. We could not have writing without technology, nor technology without writing. To find natural means of writing technology is a challenge and a humbling way of viewing technology and the great advancements that have been made in the world.
Supernovae are stars that explode. All supernovae can happen one of two was. One happens in the Binary star system, and the other happens at the end of a stars life time. Most supernovae can outshine entire galaxies, and put off more energy than our sun can produce in its entire life time. With some of the supernovae scientist can use them to help understand the expansion of the universe. Not every supernova can be used to study the expansion of the universe. Supernovas can tell us things about the universe that no one knew.
The shade of pink on the ribbons are associated with “innocence” and “gaiety”. Gaiety in meaning being lighthearted and cheerful. In “Young Goodman Brown” by Nathanial Hawthorne the pink ribbons are symbolic of Faith’s innocent and gaiety. The pink ribbons are first introduced when Young Goodman Brown is walking into Salem Village with his wife Faith who turns to exchange a kiss while the wind was blowing her pink ribbons that were inside of her cap. Hawthorne reintroduces the pink ribbons when Young Goodman brown is struggling with his own thoughts and beliefs and around the goodness of people. Young Goodman brown walks into a congregation in the forest. Nathanial Hawthorne writes. “Depending upon one another’s hearts, ye had still hoped that virtue were not all a dream! Now are we undeceived!-Evil is the nature of mankind. Evil must be your only happiness. Welcome, again, my children to the communion of your race.”-(Nathanial Hawthorne, “Young Goodman Brown”, (1835)). Young Goodman brown has basically lost faith in his own fellowmen by this point. He loses his faith after watching one of Faith’s ribbons get caught on a tree and land on a twig. Faith is his only symbol of love and purity. Purity as in a woman of God and faith. He believes Faith has lost her faith. Without faith he wouldn’t be Young Goodman Brown. Rather than strolling towards the villain towards the
