Yossi Bugani lives a normal life in Berlin, Germany. He is a college students, and lived by himself. “What the hell!” Yossi said, as he saw a rock being thrown into his window. He saw a silhouette and went to investigate. His blood, curdling “Nazis!” Yossi said, as he was being tackled by a Nazi soldier. The Nazi soldier tackles Yossi and put a hand over his mouth. He was jumped by the soldier and was stolen of his money, clothes, and dignity. Yossi shed a tear as the soldier puts Yossi’s hand behind his back. A tear shed from Yossi’s eye. Talking to no one but himself, he said “I was bullied in school. I, I was a snitch. I got jumped. I got beaten. And I did it again. I could have been a Good Samaritan and let it go, but the selfish me wanted revenge on Eli. He was the one that beat me up.” Yossi was sniffling, he went back to his area, and the day passed by with nothing out of the usual happening. The day passed by, and the next morning, Yossi was woke by the same thing. Nazi officers screeching at the filthy jews. Yossi decided he couldn’t live with himself without admitting what he had done. He walked up to where most of his inmates were sitting, and stuck his head into what they were doing. “JUDAS!” Eli screamed as he ran up to Yossi. Eli and his inmates ganged up on Yossi. Yossi admitted he was sorry, and just wanted to live a better life, and he promised he would share his food with everyone, and he was doing everything in his power for them to forgive him. Every so often, ordinary humans are driven to the point were they have no choice but to think of themselves. One of the most famous example used today is the Holocaust. Elie Wiesel’s memoir Night demonstrates how fear is a debilitating force that causes people to lose sight of who they once were. After being forced into concentration camps, Elie was rudely awakened into reality. Traumatizing incidents such as Nazi persecution or even the mistreatment among fellow prisoners pushed Elie to realize the cruelty around him; Or even the wickedness Elie himself is capable of doing. This resulted in the loss of faith, innocence, and the close bonds with others.

Although sometimes what he gives to his fellow soldiers might not be returned, Yossarian looks out for his friends and cares about his tent mates. His ability to mourn the people he cares about is impressive and heroic because throughout the mourning process of soldiers in his squadron such as McWatt and Hungry Joe, Yossarian is able to remain sane while everybody around him is not. While even though he sometimes claims that he is insane, Yossarian’s actions demonstrate his heroic character. Since the publication of, Night by Eliezer Wiesel, the holocaust has been deemed one of the darkest times in humanity, from the eradication of Jewish people to killing of innocents. Wiesel was one of the Jewish people to be in the holocaust and from his experience he gave us a memoir that manages to capture the dark side of human nature in the holocaust. He demonstrates the dark side of human nature through the cruelty the guards treat the Jews and how the Jews became cold hearted to each other. Wiesel uses foreshadowing and imagery, and metaphors to describe these events.
We first see a boy with a feeling of hope and ignorance as his hometown is occupied and he’s moved into the ghetto. Then, as he’s transferred to a concentration camp, he questions his faith and slowly loses a sense of who he once was. But all of this puts him in an important position, he knows that he must share with the world what he has experienced in order to prevent a repeat of what happened in the camps. Here he is no longer ignorant of the world around him, here he experienced one of the darkest times in man's history.
A Lucky Child by Thomas Buergenthal is a memoir about his time as a Jewish child in multiple ghettos and death camps in and around Germany during World War II. The author shares about his reunions with family and acquaintances from the war in the years between then and now. Buergenthal wished to share his Holocaust story for a number of reasons: to prevent himself from just being another number, to contribute to history, to show the power and necessity of forgiveness, the will to not give up, and to question how people change in war allowing them to do unspeakable things. The memoir is not a cry for private attention, but a call to break the cycle of hatred and violence to end mass crimes.

Elie studies Jewish mystical texts of the Cabbala with Moshe the Beadle. Moshe becomes a teacher to Elie and teaches him the Jewish traditions. The government later expels the Jews and deported some of the Jews of Sighet, one of them is Moshe. He comes back to Sighet to warn them of the upcoming danger, which was the mass execution of Jews throughout Europe. The town of Sighet found him to be crazy and ignored his warning. During a break, a worker threw some bread on the wagon. There, “[d]ozens of starving men fought desperately over a few crumbs” (100). Elie saw that when the bread had landed, there were people “trampling, tearing at, and mauling each other” (101). One piece landed in Elie’s wagon and a man named Mier killed his own father to get the piece. This shows the barbaric behavior elicited by the suffering the Jews had to endure. In Elie Wiesel’s Night, he recounts his horrifying experiences as a Jewish boy under Nazi control. His words are strong and his message clear. Wiesel uses themes such as hunger and death to vividly display his days during World War II. Wiesel’s main purpose is to describe to the reader the horrifying scenes and feelings he suffered through as a repressed Jew. His tone and diction are powerful for this subject and envelope the reader. Young readers today find the actions of Nazis almost unimaginable. This book more than sufficiently portrays the era in the words of a victim himself.
Director Mark Herman presents a narrative film that attests to the brutal, thought-provoking Nazi regime, in war-torn Europe. It is obvious that with Herman’s relatively clean representation of this era, he felt it was most important to resonate with the audience in a profound and philosophical manner rather than in a ruthlessness infuriating way. Despite scenes that are more graphic than others, the films objective was not to recap on the awful brutality that took place in camps such as the one in the movie. So many times World War II books give detail about the war or what went on inside the Concentration Camps, yet this book gives insight to a different side. A side where a child not only had to hide from Nazi’s in threat of being taken as a Jew, but a child who hid from the Nazi’s in plain sight, threatened every day by his identity. Yeahuda captures the image of what life was like from the inside looking out. “Many times throughout the war we felt alone and trapped. We felt abandoned by all outside help. Like we were fighting a war on our own” (Nir 186). Different from many non-fiction books, Nir uses detail to give his story a bit of mystery and adventure.
