The Child Development Center of College of San Mateo provides early care and educational programs for children between the ages of 3 to 5 years old. Children are divided into classrooms with a “master” teacher, a “regular” teacher, and two or three “associate” teachers. Klara attended Classroom, “A,” a stimulating and well-resourced classroom. Klara was observed for two hours on Monday from 9 am to 11 am and for two hours on Wednesday from 9 am to 11 am. During these two hours, classroom activities consisted of “free time,” “story time,” and an outside “play time.” A “master” teacher, a “regular” teacher, and two “associate” teachers were present during observations. Additionally, a total of eighteen children were in attendance during the observed days.

It is common knowledge that a parent is considered the most efficient caregiver for their children. It’s also known that with daily responsibilities of caring for a child financially, parents partake in full-time and/or part-time employment. While needing to do so, many children attend daycare/preschool facilities. Granted, it is the parent’s responsibility to cautiously select where they decide to take their children. This is because parents know that while they are away for numerous hours of the day, their children are in the hands of another care provider and that their care would have an enormous impact on their children. At a young age, a child’s social and cognitive skills are continuing to take shape and the amount of time spent in these facilities has a resilient impact on a child’s development. With proper and superior care no matter the time spent, such positive effects on a child’s development should endure in a child’s cognitive and social development. High quality early childhood education programs and highly effective, passionate teachers or care providers will not only promote young children’s development and academic achievement but will also foster a lifelong passion for learning. ECE programs and educators utilize learning centers to contribute to young children’s acquisition of literacy, numeracy, creative thinking, problem solving, and motor skills as well as a number of other skills and knowledge (Jarrett, 2010). The benefits of learning centers are many. Learning centers teach important concepts, build interest, integrate subject matter, and allow for inquiry (Jarrett, 2010). These well organized and defined interest areas provide children with choices, hands-on learning, meaningful progression of skill acquisition, self-direction, and the ability to make connections (Kostelnik et al., 2011).

During my time observing at the Seed Day Care, I saw our course objectives come to life. I saw many different students who had different needs and behaviors. The teachers were highly qualified to meet the needs of all students and create a positive learning environment for all students in the class. The teacher 's had to adapt to different situations and help different students throughout the course of the day. They also had to make accommodations and modifications to help students in their class. One student had a speech impairment and a therapist came to spend time with that student individually. Another child had ADHD and had to be seated close to the teacher in order to prevent misbehavior and to help the child remain on task. When the student was near the teacher, she responded better to assignments and circle time. Observing this class has showed me many ways that teachers can meet the needs of all students in the class. The use of technology and visual aids was helpful to all students. This helped bring reading to life for all the students. Small group work helped all children as they

Preschool is not like kindergarten, but instead a stepping-stone that prepares young students for the years of schooling they will have later in life. As I personally take the time to have a reflection over the course of “Child and Adolescent Development” I find myself intrigued with the amount of knowledge I gained during this course this semester. I wanted to take the time to concentrate on three specific areas in which I felt I had the most growth, but also came as a challenge to me as well. It is important when reflecting over a course that I look at what I found to be challenging, as this was an opportunity of growth for me individually. In this paper I will review some of the main topics that I found to be interesting but also resourceful for my future aspiration not only as a family life educator but also a mother one day.
