Many young students have now started to work at a part time job or full time job while being in high school or college. Most of these students that are working are either working at a fast food restaurant or a low pay job to get students to work. Working while going to school might be a step of growing up and paying bills, but working actually impacts student’s education Fast food industries just want student’s to work but working in this low skill job there is not really a big benefit that you can get out of it. Amitai Etzioni states, “The hours are often long. Among those 14 to 17, a third of fast-food employees (including some school dropouts) labor more than 30 hours per week, according to the Charper-Fraser study” (Etzioni, 241). Theses students working long hours impacts student’s ability to perform daily skills-especially if they go to school all day in the morning. Many of theses students go to school in the morning and then in the afternoon they work a part time job or full time. They get home from work not really motivated to do any homework from school and just go to bed. Doing this type of routine would eventually hurt the student’s academic performance in school. What is the point of working so many hours at work if this impacts school grades ? Being less motivated to do homework and assignments would hurt students grades. In the article , “The Impact of Student Employment” states, “When combining the direct and indirect impact on grades, though, working more than 20 hours a week on campus or off negatively affects students' academic performance, as the significant time that students spend working ultimately drags down their grades” ( Lederman ). Etzioni claims, “ Many teens find the instant reward of money, and the youth status symbols it buys, much more alluring than credits in calculus courses, European history, or foreign languages” (Etzioni, 242). Working in fast food restaurants students are not winning a lot of money maybe they are nearly earning minimum wage especially if they have no working experience. Working long shift hours and winning nearly minimum wage does not sound great not one bit. Many people love the sound of money who doesn't ? It is not worth dropping out of high school or college just to make minimum wage. Some students would rather win minimum wage and work long shifts because they make more money but in reality theses students are just wasting their time working long shifts. People should continue their education, there is a diversity of different opportunities that education can offer. While working at a fast food restaurant people would not be able to gain half of the knowledge that students that stayed in school
