Written by Edward Ward and published in 1706, the Wooden World Dissected explains the inside of a ship that most people do not get to see. The ship and the people in it are supposed to represent the makeup of the Royal Navy. He begins the book with a letter explaining how he wants to inform the reader with more information than they could get from looking at a picture. This leads the reader to believe that he is going to write a book full of dull facts, however he writes a satire. He describes everyone, from the Sea Captain all the way down the ladder to the common sailor. He uses comparisons, descriptions of relationships and character, and his own voice to paint a picture of a life aboard a ship in the mid fifteenth to early sixteenth century.
I will be discussing artwork using the Barthes Rhetoric of Image. I will discuss how it uses linguistic message, non-coded iconic, coded iconic, and idiolect. The image I am using is “American Gothic” by Grant Wood on page 538. I hope this painting shows the reflection of hope in the people despite the Depression.
Crafts were made by individual families in addition to their chores. They mostly made pottery, utensils, and textiles for enjoyment as well as trade. The poorer families only made what was necessary for their family. Nobility and royalty had custom crafts specially made for them. Nobles and royals would sponsor artists to work in their own workshops and make luxury goods that were monuments for political leaders, and religious items for major ceremonies.

In the rosewood and racial violence in January 1923 lynching was common in the u’s but in the south of the united states two years before representative l.c. dyer of the Missouri introduced a bill in the house of representatives to make lynching federal crime. Dyer acted out as a voice for blacks the bill passed the house but not the south they prevented a vote resulting in the measure’s leaving the state to deal with the lynching. Although lynching had died down by sixty-four in 1921, 1922 fifty-seven years ended and lynching had fifty-one victims that were black and six that were white. That something I don’t understand fifty-one black’s not to count the ones that were gunned down and I believe that most of them that died did not have anything to do with it the stuff they deserve was harsh.lynchings,shoutings,burning,and whatever else they was just harsh. In 1923 there were several murdered. The first week of January, rosewood was the center that became a riot, massacre, between the races causing a race war between the two.
Life for a craftsmen in the Middle Ages was and could be difficult and challenging. Some starting at higher social ranks than others, being treated like less. Facing death, plague, sickness, disease, sadness, famine, poverty, and pain. All a risk craftsmen might go through, or already had. And some, never having a place to call home and rest without having to leave the next day or month. Craftsmen in the Middle Ages had one of the most difficult and dangerous jobs in the time period, maybe even today.
In the 1800s there were different industries that were popular at different times. One of them was the lumber industry. The lumber industry was very important and is still an important industry today in Minnesota.
“Woodworker” is a very broad term for a large number of jobs. Anything made out of wood was made by some type of woodworker. The carpenter was responsible for building houses. He made planks out of logs. He used the planks to make shingles and boards, which were given to the joiner so he could finish the roof. The joiner was responsible for finishing the house. He made doors, windows, and roofs with shingles. There was the cabinetmaker, who was responsible for making a wide variety of furniture. This included cabinets, dressers, candlestands, chairs, and tables. The carpenter was the head craftsman, but he had many slaves and other people working for him. This shows that the woodworker had a very wide variety of tasks to do. Woodworking provided employment for many settlers. The woodworker could not do all of these tasks with just his hands, he needed tools.

The most common today are marquetry and parquetry, which are both forms of veneering and caring. There are many different styles of woodworking all of which are a very impressive art form.
When I was planning my senior project I knew I wanted to make something I could keep and use for myself but I wasn’t quite sure who would be my mentor. Then I thought it would be special to do something like this with my grandpa who is now 84 years old and has 40+ years of experience with construction. He even built his home that he and my grandmother are living in today, in 1954. My grandpa started making canes for himself, to donate and just for fun and I thought it will be cool to make myself a cane and customize it with designs. Before starting my project, I had no previous knowledge of working with wood or heavy machinery. The only time I worked with wood was hammering a nail into a wooden wall. Now after I have completed my project, I know how to stain and varnish wood, use a table saw, stationary sander, wood burner and a drill press machine.
My time in trade has been very fun because I learned many things that I had no idea about know that I know it will help me in a long run because if anyone needs helps with a carpenter’s problem and can volunteer and get the job done. My mentor name was David Joe Ursy. He works for Joe McGee Construction. He works for Joe McGee on the farm portion of his business. He works on tractors, combines, welding, and farming crops. He has been working for Joe McGee for 20-30 years. To me it's fun and interesting. I like to do it some people don’t like it. When we started working on my project, I cleaned all the metal with a wire brush. Once I got it all the metal cleaned of rust, I started making the top after I got the top like I wanted it, I welded it and put all the nuts and bolts inside the table. I checked to see how it looked and took them out. I cleaned the camshaft and welded it to the flexplate.
