Winston Churchill was said to be possibly Britain’s most powerful weapon against Hitler’s Germany. He succeeded Neville Chamberlain as prime minister of England who had become known for the policy of appeasement after the Munich Conference. Churchill was also a wonderful orator, and he could rally and persuade the people. In my opinion, there are several reasons that Churchill was known as the most powerful weapon for Britain to fight against Hitler and all he stood for. First of all, I think the statement is meant to say that no British gun, airplane, or tank was going to be the thing to beat Hitler and his army. After all, all of these things are useless if no one is there to instruct on how to use them or when to use them. It is stating that the only weapon that was going to be powerful enough to challenge Germany was none other than Winston Churchill. In class when we looked at his picture, most people saw a grumpy, serious old man that was extremely tough and dedicated to his country. This is probably what most people also saw. Both nations were somewhat afraid of each other at the time, so they both needed reassurance and Stalin needed time to rebuild the army that he had destroyed in the Purge of the Red Army. Finally, on June 22nd of 1941, Hitler set into motion Operation Barbarossa. This was the plan that the Germans had created for when they invaded the USSR. Even though Germans believed it would be a quick war over the territory, they were proved wrong by the Russians who were going to hold their ground no matter what.
