When you look into veterans eyes, you can see several things that are important. The pride shines through, the pride of serving ones country, and the dedication to protect other peoples freedom even it if requires paying the ultimate price. These men and women give their lives to give us our freedom. As a one of the many individuals that they are protecting it is vital that we see that pride and appreciate where it comes from. For a school project we interviewed veterans and reflected on those interviews, I gained a better understanding of how to answer the question: why are veterans important to us. Veterans remind us of the horrors of war, of the innocent lives that were lost, and the millions of people those lost lives affected. Each of those veterans that we see has served our country fighting not only for our rights but also for the rights of those across the world. They chose to leave their families, jobs, and life back home to go and make sure that those human rights were being maintained across the world. Respect is probably the most important trait that needs to be shown towards your superiors. Every Armed forces branch in the United States of America has a chain of command in which respect is the main premise behind the entire organization. Respect backs the ideals and leadership within any chain of command. Respect is important in the design of the military system itself. You have to automatically trust and do what higher ranking cadet, or any cadre member says because they hold power and most likely have more experience then you. You must show them respect to because they have more knowledge and know how, not to mention they have earned the stop they are in. Respect also tires into the worrier’s ethos, which is an important aspect of what it means to be a member of the army.
It is well known that veterans have the opportunity to pursue a college education after they have served. The problem is students do not know how to appropriately approach or interact with them. Society has even been led to fear them. Edward Palm, author of, “The Veterans are Coming! The Veterans are Coming!”, uses his personal experience to argue that there are five applications of “common sense” to be used when interacting with veterans. Because Palm very effectively uses Ethos in his argument, along with the connotation that veteran interaction is simply “common sense”, any “typical” CU student would more than likely be persuaded. Although Palm’s argument is already very well constructed, there are still some changes he could have made to make it even stronger.

Veteran care needs to be improved because they are not getting the proper care that they need, not receiving credit for their service, and they were willing to pay the ultimate price for freedom, yet people will not pay the price of time to help them.
In the past, veterans have fought people, such as tyrants, dictators, and emperors, who threatened to take our rights away. World War I started as a dispute over territory in the European countries. The United States joined the war two years after the dispute began, siding with Britain, France, and Russia, to fight for peace and to preserve democracy in Europe. The soldiers who fought chose to keep the country safe from possible invasions and to make world peace. The veterans who fought in World War II faced new technological warfare and a different enemy. Despite terrifying conditions, the veterans persevered for the greater good, and managed to help guide the world back into balance. The War on Terror is being fought in order to establish democracy and a stable baseline for peace in Iraq, as well as the world. Now they face a new adversary, disguised and not met on the traditional field of battle. They also are not sure who the enemy really is, which makes their purpose difficult to achieve. For my service project, I went out and brought the veterans personal items ( pillow, shaving cream, razors, sheet, etc..) that I thought that will be very useful. Veterans, more often then not, provided a useful diversity to most cultures that they join. They are usually more focused on international affairs and have first hand experience dealing with extremely different groups, sometimes even hostile. They are also the only group which has proven a willingness to endure suffering and sacrifice directly for the society they served and, therefore, have a vested interest and sense of ownership in their society's future, unlike most of their other peers. War veterans spend every day of their life fighting to survive and it’s not because they are at war. The issue at hand is that our country does not supply enough help to these veterans, even though they have to go through so much after war. It is embarrassing to know that our government and society, do very little to give back to those who fought to protect us. People have said that there are far more important issues to worry about, but that is not true. Every issue, no matter how big or small, is of importance. To me this issue needs to be given more attention in general. Very little people worry about this because they never had to deal with it in life, and that’s the problem. We, as a society, should be giving back and helping soldiers cope with life after war. Although this is not a typical issue that we hear much about, it is time that it becomes relevant. It is time that we start showing gratitude to these veterans. This is the reason I have chosen this issue for my research paper this semester. In this essay I will give you a planned out idea as to where I want to take my research. I am going to write about life after war, government benefits, and disorders. I hope you are interested enough, that I can research and inform people about my ideas.
